Chapter Eleven

Havi

I wasn’t going to fuck it up. I refused.

It was odd how I hadn’t noticed my arms had been painfully empty until her slight weight was back in them. I’d reveled in the press of her body all night, soothing her with long, careful strokes as she slept against me.

I dropped off with her somewhere around midnight, and awakened when I felt light on my lids coming through the window.

What I saw made my breath catch. In the darkness, I hadn’t been able to make out the deep circles around her eyes or the paleness of her skin. But she looked...bad. My stomach twisted with guilt even as I thought it, wondering if she’d gotten any sleep since I’d last seen her. Or a decent meal. Even slack, her mouth held a tightness that was probably born from stress, and without the two dimples evident on her cheeks, she looked like she needed to sleep for days.

She looked like she was wasting away. And everything in me screamed that I should take her back to her apartment and nourish her, body and soul.

But instead, I let her sleep for as long as she needed within the bracket of my arms.

Belatedly, I noticed one of her hands had fisted in my shirt overnight, as though she’d wanted to tether me to her in her sleep.

I heard a telltale creak above me and Winden’s blond head appeared over the side of the bunk, curls falling down over his ears.

“You know we’re not supposed to have guests,” he whispered. “You could get in trouble.”

I raised my free hand to my lips, giving him a shush sign.

But he didn’t get the hint. “Isn’t that the medic who treated us on the ship?”

Now I made the shush sign twice, narrowing my eyes with a warning.

“Actually y’all are pretty cute together—”

Fay’s breathing started to shift and I reached up, pushing Win’s head back into his bunk.

She stretched against me, rubbing her nose back and forth along my shoulder like a sleepy kitten. My heart lurched in response and yet again I was reminded why I’d fallen so hard, so quickly for this woman.

“I wasn’t supposed to fall asleep,” she mumbled, eyes barely open. “But you felt so good, I couldn’t help...”

She seemed to drift back into sleep for a second and I pulled the covers around us to shield her from any prying eyes.

She jerked awake again.

“Do you have any plans today?” She stifled a yawn.

“Nothing at all, angel. Do you want to do something?”

“I figure we should grab breakfast somewhere and then talk this out.” She paused, fingers unfisting from my shirt. She tried to rub out the wrinkles, but it was a lost cause. “Havi, I’m really sorry for what happened the other night. And I’m even more sorry for not calling you these past few days.”

“I think we need to work on communication.”

“I think you’re right.” Her hand crept around my waist. “I haven’t been in a relationship for so long that I think I’ve forgotten how.
