We spent the next few days filming confessionals about the brunch and then some general material I thought might eventually be used for promos. The morning after our last shoot, we arrived at the Chef Supreme kitchen to find it decked out for Halloween. Orange and black streamers dangled festively from the ceiling, far enough above our stoves so that even the most vigorous bananas Foster wouldn’t light them on fire. Thick cobwebs featuring comically oversize plastic spiders hung in the corners. Pumpkins and gourds were piled along the walls.

Which was odd, considering it was still June. Where did they even find gourds this time of year? And not just any kind of gourd, but those fancy green ones that looked like swans?

“Hello, chefs!” Adrianna greeted us from the front of the room. A pair of glittery black cat’s ears perched atop her tight black ponytail. “And happy Halloween. At least it’ll be Halloween for our viewers. That’s when this episode’s going to be airing.”

Ah. That made more sense.

“Your challenge is going to be Halloween-themed, too. So get ready to make a spooky dish. And when you talk up our sponsors, feel free to use Halloween-y language. ‘This oven heats up scarily fast!’ That sort of thing.” She exited, and out came Maz to tell us this officially. He was wearing a glittering teal bodysuit, platform heels, and a wig teased with what looked like so much hair spray he’d better stay far away from our stoves. I was so distracted by his fake eyelashes, which were longer and thicker than any of the plastic spiders’ legs, that I missed his corny Halloween introduction, complete with menacing laughter. I wasn’t that upset. I’d get to hear it at least twice more.

“Your task today, chefs, will be to create a spoooooooky dish to serve fifty guests at the Chef Supreme Halloween party tomorrow,” Maz said.

Okay. That wasn’t so bad.

But Maz stopped and considered, teetering on his high, high heels. “You know what? That’s not a scary enough challenge for Halloween. So . . .” He let loose with a sinister-sounding laugh. “You’re going to create twoOoOo dishes for our Halloween party.”

They made us fake horror at that announcement for two more takes, but it wasn’t all that real; this still wasn’t too bad a challenge. And my mind was already churning. This could actually be fun.

The obvious solution would be to make something that looked scary. Deviled eggs that looked like eyeballs. Noodles that looked like worms. Anything spattered with red stuff that looked like blood.

The noodle/worm idea was appealing to me. I hadn’t made pasta in the competition yet. And noodle kugel was a traditional Jewish dish that held tight to my heart . . . and could also be made to look extremely disturbing. To be honest, it could be a little gross-looking on the best of days. Noodles submerged in a creamy cheese base, some of them sticking up top to get crispy in the oven. Raisins or other fruits flecking the kugel like little bugs.
