That's what she said. We need someone to watch us have sex to have a mate bond. And my mother knows her secret. How is that possible? Even in my own head, my words seemed to tumble over one another.

I'm not sure, love. Ana knowing a cat's secret? That seems unlikely. Mal's voice was as soothing as ever. With Vanessa asleep beside me, I tried to stay as still as possible. She hadn't been sleeping much and the last thing she needed was to be woken up by my exaggerated gestures while telepathing with my other mate.

I know. I'm not surprised that Kat knows. But my mom? Do you think Kat told her? I closed my eyes and focused on Mal's voice to help keep me calm. Part of me really wanted to shake Vanessa awake and badger her with questions.

I doubt it. You know how werecats are with secrets. Kat has probably known about whatever it is for ages. At least we found the missing piece about the mate bond, he said.

And now I've got to have sex with my girlfriend in front of someone.

Don't worry about it too much, love. Someone is bound to walk in on you at some point or another. Especially me. I could almost hear the grin in his voice.

You're loving this way too much. I tried not to laugh aloud. If he were sitting next to me, that grin would have earned him a punch in the arm.

Hey, I'm the one trapped in this tiny little hut with only thoughts of my sexy mate getting it on a mile away with her girlfriend.

Equally, sexy girlfriend, I reminded him.

Did you just agree that you were sexy? The playful tone in his voice had me blushing.

You two are getting along a lot better these days. I changed the subject.

We have a shared interest. Changers of different species can become allies for a common cause.

Vanessa had told me something similar about wolves and vampires. "If they want something bad enough, they'll team up just to get what they want." Her words echoed in my mind.

So I've heard.

Have you?

Oh yeah, I said. Mal didn't respond right away. Where'd you go?

I'm here. Someone is outside, moving quickly away from me.

Is it Dugan?

No. Female.

A cat?

I don't think so.

"Ness." I rubbed her arm, hoping to rouse her gently from her slumber. "Mal hears someone outside."

Vanessa responded to me faster than I expected. Her eyes popped open and she sniffed, her face turned in the direction of the cold air seeping in through the cracked window. She sat up and moved toward the ledge. I got up with her and pulled on the sweatshirt that hung off the post of the headboard.

"Who is it?" I asked.

"Maeve. She's running."

"Is she a Breeder?"

"Yes."

Vanessa said it's a Breeder named Maeve, I told Mal.

She's scared out of her wits. He sounded distracted. I can smell it.

"Mal can smell her fear."

"Something's wrong," Vanessa said as a black sweater and jeans melted over her naked body. "Let's go down.
