Many federal agencies, including all 56 FBI field offices, have trained SWAT teams. State police departments and county sheriff’s departments often have teams as well.

SWAT originally stood for Special Weapons Assault Team. But early members and leaders thought the name sounded too aggressive. The unit’s name changed to Special Weapons and Tactics.

SWAT response teams are now all over the globe. Many send representatives to competitions where officers compete in tactical exercises.

SWAT Starters

Los Angeles Police Officer John Nelson came up with the idea of using military tactics in order to gain the upper hand in resolving high-risk public safety situations. He took his ideas to police inspector Daryl Gates who fully supported them. Gates increased the role and scope of SWAT when he served as the department’s chief of police from 1978 until 1992.
