Ross had originally wanted to get the whole crew together for a monthly blowout, but because of scheduling, there would always be at least two members excluded. Patrols must be maintained, so that meant at least two abstainers, one on duty and one about to go on duty. So, he had settled for meetings on the last Friday night of the month with everyone not on duty or about to go on duty. The first pitcher of beer and Mrs. Pederson’s special pizza went on his bill, and spouses and significant others were welcome to join the group. Thankfully, the twenty-one-day shift rotation meant everyone had a chance to attend and feel free to partake at least every other month. The group was sometimes as large as a dozen on those nights, but eight or ten was normal.

Ross’s current scheduling predicament stemmed from the fact that minimal security coverage for the park meant there had to be at least one person on duty at any one time, so that meant he needed at least six people. He had hired five so far, so that had left him to cover the shortfall himself. Joy’s willingness to take occasional shifts during the three-month trial period was a big help though.

As he sat listening to his crew’s banter this particular Friday night, he found himself appreciating his hiring choices and hoping for their sake that the board renewed his contract. But then Lloyd came out from behind the bar, his shift now over, and smacked Ross’s shoulder in greeting, jolting him out of his thoughts.
