VINCENT THE DRUNK

At just after six that evening, Jericho trotted down the stairs and made his way toward the kitchen.

He spotted Tim on the phone in the living room, Mark was sleeping on a chaise by the pool. He entered the kitchen to find Gram, Patty, and the kids. Georgia was at work, managing his upscale restaurant, Carole Jean’s.

Jericho was meeting Vincent at The Road for dinner. Felt like a time suck, but he was doing it for Livy. Crossing his brother and dad off his list meant he didn’t have to deal with them going forward. They’d exited his life years ago and he saw no reason to bring them back in now.

Jericho was confident his brother had nothing to do with the shooting. How could he? He was new in town, worked at a casket company, and came across as somewhat of an idiot.

The bright spot in this? Liv had agreed to meet him there.

Patty was pulling chicken thighs from the oven while potatoes boiled on the stove.

Jericho eased down beside the kids, busy coloring at the kitchen table. “What trouble have you two urchins gotten into today?”

“None,” Annie replied. “I was good.”

Jericho smiled at her. “Were you with your mommy, today?”

“I had school.”

His niece spent three afternoons a week in pre-K. “Learn anything?”

“Uh-huh,” she replied before switching out the red crayon for the purple one.

“What about you, Owen?” he asked.

“I played. Me and Mommy had paint class.”

“Nice. Where’s your artwork?”

He pointed at the fridge with his pudgy finger.

Patty plucked if off and handed it to Jericho.

“This is good stuff, buddy,” Jericho said as he eyed the paint splotches.

“Tanks.”

“Where’s Gram?” Jericho asked.

“Outside, by the pool,” Patty replied.

“Is she okay?” he asked.

“Not really, but she’s putting on a good show,” Patty replied.

“I’ll go talk to her.” Jericho pushed out of the chair. “I’ll see you two tomorrow,” Jericho said to the kids.

“Bye,” Owen said while he continued coloring.

“Where are you going?” Annie asked.

“To my restaurant to have dinner with friends,” he replied. “Do you remember the pretty lady with the big hair?”

Annie smiled. “Uh-huh.”

“I’m taking her to dinner.”

“We have food,” Annie said.

“Should I invite her to have dinner with us, sometime?”

“Okay,” Annie replied.

Jericho tossed Tim a nod as he strode outside. Mark had just woken up and was on his phone.

Gram sat alone at one of the round tables, poolside. Bryan’s death had changed her. She looked small, frail, and sad.

Jericho sat beside her. “How you doin’?”

“I miss Bryan.”

He held her small hand in his large one. “Me, too.”

“Have the police contacted you about his case?”

“No,” he replied.

“Have you called them?”

He shook his head, but he stayed silent.

“Jericho, we need answers,” she pushed. “People have to pay for this. They have to be punished.”

“When I was a kid, you used to tell me to be patient. You’d say, Christmas is coming, Jericho. Be patient. Or if I wanted it to be my birthday, you’d tell me to enjoy the time leading up to it because once the day passed, I’d have to wait another year all over again.
