DEJA

As I shook the mayor’s hand, I was ridiculously happy. Not because the interview had gone well, which it had, but because I would see Hawke later tonight after he’d been out of town for the past two days. So what if I’d arrived at work late because I’d slept in after being up on the phone talking to Hawke last night? I was never late, so the chief editor hadn’t even reprimanded me.

In fact, she’d taken one look at me, smiled, and told me, “Good for you.”

I hadn’t realized what she meant until I’d visited the restroom a couple of hours later and seen the wide grin on my face in the bathroom mirror. With that grin only one of two things was possible. I was either getting shagged or was on happy pills.

“Thank you for your time, Mr. Mayor.” I smiled at him. “It was a pleasure to talk to you.”

He’d bored me, and I’d been distracted during the interview. The feeling I was forgetting something had lingered. I couldn’t put my finger on it.

“The pleasure was mine, Mrs. Gooden.” He returned the smile. “You’re an excellent journalist. I look forward to seeing your article in the paper.”

I thanked him again, a sense of pride welling inside me. I’d worked hard for my career. It was nice knowing I was appreciated and recognized for my work.

I checked my watch and added an extra pep to my step, the heels of my pumps clicking on the floor. I would see Jade at our favorite restaurant.

Every last Thursday of the month, we met for lunch. We’d started doing this together since we became professionals. Life had been busy, and we’d hardly seen each other. To avoid our friendship falling apart, we’d decided to meet at least once per month.

I got into my car and pulled out of the driveway. Fifteen minutes later, I parked in front of the restaurant, a small, classy joint with a wide variety of West Indian cuisine. As I walked toward the entrance, my phone vibrated in my bag. I dug through it and smiled. Hawke had messaged me to call him if I needed anything.

A man leaving the restaurant held the door for me. I thanked him, then sent a message to Hawke to stop worrying about me.

“Deja!”

Jade sat at a corner table, waving in my direction. I smiled and hurried over. We embraced, her hug warm as always.

“Girl, you look amazing,” I said. She had on an enviable blue-and-white floral dress that complimented her slender shape. The dress was low cut, displaying the two shades of skin color, dark brown and pale pink, from where her vitiligo had spread over the years.

“So do you.” She eyed me the way she did when she was about to gossip. “The way you were strutting your stuff just now is different. That walk said I had great sex last night and I don’t care if the world knows it.”

I chuckled, taking up the menu to hide my guilty face.
