Chapter Thirteen
The flight to Atlanta wasn't that bad. The children were excited to be flying. They loved the excitement of seeing people walking and shopping at the airport in Atlanta. An Atlanta Falcons jersey caught Andrewâs and Alexâs attention at a concession store selling souvenirs. Grant pulled out his credit card to purchase the jerseys for them. Reese stopped him. She reminded the boys they were Ravens fans, and both had Ravens jerseys at home that she had bought for them. They looked at Grant regretfully and told him, âNo thanks, Mr. Grant.â Andrew said, âWeâre Ravens fans. We have to remain loyal to our hometown team.â
Grant smiled at Reese and put his credit card away. They left the store and found a restaurant to grab a quick meal. The children being children took full advantage of the situation and ordered the unhealthiest foods that they could find on the menu. By the time they got on their connecting flight, they were full of sugar and energy, while Grant and Reese were both exhausted.
Because there were five of them, they couldnât all sit together. Sunday and Grant were in the two seats in front of Reese, Alex, and Andrew. A middle-aged woman sat next to Sunday. Trying to be kind, she looked over at Sunday and asked her what her name was. Sunday told her and talked to the woman animatedly all the way to Las Vegas. Sunday told her about Miss Minerva. She introduced the woman to Reese, Alex, and finally, Andrew. She talked about Cinnamonâs upcoming wedding, and when the woman looked at Grant and asked Sunday if he was her daddy. Sunday looked at the lady and said in a very earnest manner, âThatâs my daddy, but heâs already spoken for. But I can find you a husband if you want me to.â
Embarrassed, the woman smiled and said, âNo, thank you.â
Grant apologized for his daughter, âShe sometimes forgets that she is only seven.â
Sunday looked at her father and said, âDaddy, I didnât forget. I know how old I am.â
The rest of the flight was uneventful. The children finally went to sleep. The lights on the plane were dimmed, and the buzz from the other passengers quieted. Reese sat in her seat and allowed herself to relax. She closed her eyes, and soon, the exhaustion caught up with her, and she fell asleep.
She awoke with a jerk when the captainâs voice came over the loudspeaker, announcing that they would be landing in Las Vegas in a few minutes. She yawned and looked around at her sons. She glanced at the slot between the seats in front and saw that Grant was still awake. She wondered what he was thinking. He had taken charge and came through for her. She was thankful that he had found a solution when she had once again found herself ready to run from trouble.
She had no idea where she and her sons would have fled to. They couldnât return to Baltimore. She realized she had panicked and hadnât thought things through.
