Chapter 12

Before long, everyone was back in their seats, happily sipping their free drinks. It always surprised me, people’s capacity to forget and act like nothing untoward had happened.

As humans, we adapt so easily.

Especially when free alcohol is involved.

There were some sour faces, however—Beverly Lyonel’s being one, and Carter’s once I thanked him for his help but told him I wouldn’t require anything more of him. Mr. and Mrs. Wallis seemed to be chatting happily, though, having befriended another couple, and Dorothy seemed in a world of her own, watching people in the same way I was with a mix of serenity and sincerity on her face.

Could she know something?

What with her bird-watching skills, we already knew her to be observant—she could spot the tiniest creature miles out into the forest. Surely, she could see when a murderer was in her midst too. I watched her for a moment longer, though what I was looking for I couldn’t say. A clue, I supposed.

“Listen,” I said, pulling my gaze away from her and turning to Vanessa. “I’m going over to the office. There’s no cell reception, but there’s one of those old CB radios. Greg had Lucas use it earlier, I’m sure of it. I’ll call and make sure the paramedics meet us at the station, along with the police.”

“I’ll get into the kitchen and help the girls with the cleanup, then,” Vanessa said. “Good luck!”

I would have said I didn’t need luck, but the way things were going it seemed more and more likely that I would. So much for no one else getting hurt. I think we at least managed to calm the chaos, though. As I strode through the train toward the office, I smiled politely but refused to get pulled into conversation. I was more determined than ever to catch this killer, and every single one of them was a suspect.

“Hey, Lucas,” I called, spotting him just as he was entering the office. “How is he?”

“Who?” Lucas asked.

“You’re not serious?” Of all the stupid things I’d heard that day, this had to top the lot. Lucas couldn’t really be that daft, could he? From his blank, questioning expression, I had to conclude that, yes, he was indeed that daft. “Greg!”

“Oh!” He laughed uneasily, and I hoped it was at his own foolishness. “He’s sleeping. Seems a bit out of it if you ask me. Like, confused. He’ll be all right, though, yeah?”

“Yeah, he’ll be all right,” I reassured him. “He just needs time for whatever it is to flush out of his system, and the sleep will do him good. But it’s best he gets proper medical attention when we stop—I only know the basics. Speaking of which, I was hoping to use the radio to call it through. There’s no cell reception here, and I know from experience that it doesn’t pick up again until we’re almost at the station.”

“There’s a code,” Lucas said.

“What do you mean?”

“A security code. You’ve got to tap it in to get the radio to work.
