Chapter Twelve
Ethan
We were both famished after what happened in the bunker, so I suggested we hit a nearby diner for some food. If we got in and out quickly, there was less of a chance that I would run into any acquaintances or colleagues. She eagerly agreed, and soon we were pulling into the parking lot of an old-fashioned looking restaurant with red vinyl booths and a jukebox in the corner.
After ordering our meals, I took the opportunity to really study Ava for the first time since that morning. She was even more beautiful than I had remembered; her honey-toned hair framed her face perfectly, and her almond shaped eyes seemed to dance when she talked. I couldn't help but be mesmerized by her presence, and it wasn't long before she began talking about her life on the road in the months after she left the Hellstar pack.
"It's been a long winding road," she began with a sigh. "There were days I felt lost and desperate, but somehow I kept going. I never knew what might be around the corner, or what dangers would lurk in the shadows." She paused for a moment as if remembering it all too vividly. "But I never stopped believing I could find some kind of peace, no matter how hard things got."
"You did well for yourself."
She nodded. "I think so. I spent a good amount of time at the beach. I lived in an extended stay hotel before I realized how expensive that could get. that's when I got serious. Plus, I knew I shouldn't have been carrying so much cash on me, so I got some new IDs and a bank account."
"Smart move." I grinned. "But I'm not about to tell you where I keep my stash," I teased.
She laughed. "Wait? Is some of it in that bunker back there?"
I winked. "I'll never tell. And you've got sticky fingers, woman. You took my knife. I know you've still got it."
She patted her hip. "Right here in my pocket."
"You can have it, but I'm serious, you don't have to worry about when you might have to use it."
She smiled meekly. "I wish I could just switch that mentality off at your request. But I can't."
I leaned closer. "It's okay. It'll take time."
"After we part ways, then what? What'll happen then?" she asked, perking up in her chair.
"Who said we're gonna part ways?"
I watched her cheeks flush as she said, "Oh come on. I know your type. Always on the road. You don't have time for needy women like me."
"But I like making time for you," I said, leaning back in my chair. "By the way, I don't know if I told you this already but I was sort of retired when I saw the bounty for you."
"You knew you'd have to either capture or shoot me when you found me, she concluded.
"That's not why I took the job."
"Why'd you take it?"
"I had this feeling. An odd feeling. I saw you before that day I came to you in your flower shop.
