Okay, you sit down right here,â Ruthanna said, gently pushing AnnieLee toward a poolside chair. âAnd donât be nervous: Poppyâs a brilliant hairstylist.â
AnnieLee, whoâd played the last eight nights in clubs all around Nashville, was more than happy to follow any orders involving the word sit. She felt as though Poppy could shave her head bald and sheâd be too tired to even care.
Poppy, whose wide face and high cheekbones made her look like a young Debbie Harry, ran her fingers through AnnieLeeâs long hair, which was still wet from the shower.
âVirgin?â Poppy asked.
AnnieLee stared at her in shock. âExcuse me?â
Ruthanna burst into laughter, but AnnieLee couldnât imagine what was so funny. âWhat? What does she mean?â
âShe meant has your hair ever been colored,â Ruthanna said. âVirgin hair is unprocessed.â
AnnieLee couldâve died right then and there. âOh,â she said. âI thoughtââ
Poppy gently brushed one of AnnieLeeâs dark waves away from her cheek. âIt was pretty obvious what you thought, love,â she said.
âIâve used a box dye once or twice,â AnnieLee said stiffly, trying to regain some of her dignity. Sheâd never had a professional haircut, though, and the mani-pedi Ruthanna had treated her to yesterday was her first.
âWell, the color is gorgeous,â the stylist said. âI wonât mess with it.â
As Poppy began combing, misting, and snipping strands of her hair with the utmost care and tenderness, AnnieLee started to relax again. She was toying with a new melody in her head, feeling almost as if she could drift into a nap, when Ruthannaâs phone dinged with a text.
âOkay. Eileen Jackson will be here any minute,â Ruthanna said.
âWhoâs Eileen Jackson?â AnnieLee asked drowsily, and only to be polite.
âSheâs the publicist youâre hiring,â Ruthanna said. âSheâs flying in from Los Angeles.â
âWait. What?â AnnieLee said, sitting up straight and suddenly wide-awake. âWhat for?â
Ruthanna took a sip of the smoothie Maya had pressed into her hand. âJack says that now youâve got a label, itâs time you got a publicist, and since heâs your manager, youâre supposed to listen to him.â
Poppyâs scissors clicked across AnnieLeeâs back, and the bright, metallic sound reminded her of brushes tapping on a snare drum. âI thought he said I needed a lawyer,â AnnieLee said.
âAnd he was right. But the bigger you get, the more people you need,â Ruthanna said. âYouâll probably want to think about hiring an assistant at some point, too.â She flashed a sly grin at Maya. âThough Iâd recommend one who doesnât make you drink kale and bee pollen smoothies, or whatever the heck this is.â
âDonât even pretend you donât love them,â Maya said huffily.
âIs this a âfake it till you make itâ kind of thing?â AnnieLee asked. âSure, Iâm getting a name around Nashville, but I donât even have an album yet.â
âIf I had to bet, Iâd say this was the calm before the storm. Itâs best to get your team in place.â
AnnieLeeâs hair was just beginning to fall into long, elegant layers when Eileen Jackson appeared on the pool deck in a chic white dress and towering, leopard-spotted heels.
