“The Gillards knew Walter Windom,” Dee Dee declared from above us. “They used to live above a sandwich shop in Boston before Walter bought the whole building and forced them out. He ended up gutting the whole place and turning it into another restaurant.”

“How do you know this?” It was the sheriff talking now. “It’s a pretty serious accusation to just up and accuse someone of murder.”

“Yeah, how do you know so much about the Gillards?” Todd Macken was chiming in now. “Barry and Margaret are old enough to be my grandparents; they couldn’t hurt a fly.”

“Just because they are old doesn’t mean they are not capable.” Sammy was on the defense.

“There will be no jumping to conclusions,” McVoy said with finality.

“I don’t know what you need to figure out,” Dee Dee huffed. “It’s obvious the man had some kind of heart attack or something.”

“It’s obvious? What do you know? Are you a forensic authority?” Todd volleyed.

Above us, everyone started arguing.

“That’s enough,” the sheriff barked. “I want everybody to settle down. Ms. Davis, you still haven’t answered my question; how do you know so much about Mr. and Mrs. Gillard?”

“She lived right next door to the Gillards.” It was Sammy’s voice that blurted out the admission.

“Samantha, really!” Dee Dee snapped, obviously not happy with her cousin’s admission.

“He was going to find out eventually,” Sammy added.

There was a long pause of silence.

Downstairs, we barely breathed as we waited.

Someone in the office let out a deep sigh, which was followed by Dee Dee’s confession: “I used to rent the building attached to the sandwich shop for my dog grooming business. When Walter bought it, he acquired the lease on my building as well. He raised the rent so high that it was unaffordable for me to stay. I ended up moving out and going ‘mobile’ with my business. It cost me almost everything I had to make the switch.”

“So, you had just as much motive to ‘off’ Walter as the poor Gillards did,” a much younger voice accused. It had to belong to Katie Macken.”

“How dare you!” Dee Dee raised her voice.

“How dare I?” Katie spat back. “How dare you! Here you are, making accusations you can’t prove!”

Todd added his two cents, followed by Sammy going on the defense again, and the arguing continued.

I lowered my head and rubbed my temples. Their incessant bickering was giving me a headache. “I am willing to bet that the For-Sale sign on that brownstone in my vision was the sandwich shop,” I whispered to Evalynn.

“Uh-huh,” Evalynn agreed. “And we also have an explanation for why I was ‘seeing’ Dee Dee standing out on a sidewalk next to moving boxes, not to mention Todd Macken’s connection to Walter. Didn’t you say he used to work for Walter?”

I nodded as all eyes turned toward me. “Todd disclosed as much, upstairs in the sitting room. Walter basically fired him from one of his restaurants and destroyed his reputation as a sous-chef.”

“It sounds as if all of them had a connection to Mr.
