Chapter Fourteen
Mum wasnât thrilled that I chose to spend my last evening in Chester at a pub, but hid her disappointment well. âDonât worry, Ru. Iâve got Kit, a tiny glass of eggnog and finally some time to check in on the March sisters.â She shooed us off and blew me a kiss.
âWe wonât be late.â I opened the passenger door and pointed at Charlie, who sat at the wheel. âThe train leaves at ten in the morning, and youâve seen how hard it is to get this one out of bed.â
âHey!â Charlie said. âOh, waitâyouâre right.â
Mum giggled, shook against the cold air, and hurried inside.
âSo, whereâs this joint?â Charlie said.
âJust up the road from the shopping centre,â I said. âIt would probably have been our regular pub if we went to Chester uni. Jen would love the place, as all the jocks go there.â
âAnd thatâs why you want to go there?â Brendan said from the back seat. âBy the way, you do know thereâs room next to me back here?â
âAnd leave Charlie alone?â
âListen,â Charlie said. âIf you go back there, Iâll find the way. Just donât make me have to break the rear-view mirror.â
I slapped her arm. âGet your mind out of the gutter, girl.â
âI love driving this car,â Charlie said as she turned left onto Saughall Road. âIf only the sound system were a bit less 1982, it would be perfect.â
She turned the volume knob, and Robbie Williams sang âLet Me Entertain Youâ from one of Mumâs old CDs. Brendan moaned in the back seat when Charlie and I joined Robbie for the chorus.
Twenty minutes later, as Robbie declared âSheâs the Oneââwith Charlie on ear-shattering backup vocalsâI told her to stop the car. âThere wonât be any space in front of the pub, so we should park here, by the laundrette.â
âWilliam was right,â Brendan said. âYou could have stepped on the gas a little. Wouldâve saved my ears from all the racket.â
âStuff it.â Charlie backed the car expertly into an available spot. âYou loved it. I watched you mouth the words, so there.â
The two of them continued their banter as we strolled up Garden Lane towards the Chichester Arms, a pub Iâd been to a few times before I left for uni. It was only half past seven, but the buzz from the crowd could be heard from the minute we exited the car.
A taxi swung out of Cambrian Road and stopped outside the pub. Two scantily clad girls jumped out, their skirts so short I could tell the colour of their panties. The doorman didnât even look at their IDs; he probably knew they would be fake as a three-pound note anyway. A man in a hoodie stood on the corner, smoking and talking on his phone. When we passed him, he hurried down the alley behind the pub.
âBoxing Day crowd,â Brendan said when we went inside. âHope we can find seats.â
We couldnât. The pub was packed. It wouldnât surprise me if the walls were literally bulging outwards.
