THREE MONTHS LATER

I stare up at the shop front and feel pride swell in my chest.

I had to sell everything I own, except my bike, to be able to put down the deposit to go into partnership with Steel. It’s amazing what you can do in a short space of time when you put your mind to it.

I’ve never had much to my name, but this is kinda cool, especially when Lucy looks at me so proudly.

Of course, I’ve taken a long time to heal, and I’m not there yet, but I’m back on my feet after months and months of agonizing physical therapy. My leg will never be one hundred percent what it was, but I can walk all right again and lift shit, and more importantly, work.

A large slap on my back wakes me from my reverie.

“You gonna stare at that sign all day, bro?” Steel asks, looking down at me.

The man’s a machine, six-three and wide as a door. Nobody in their right mind would mess with him, which is why I guess they wanted him to be the Sergeant at Arms and the enforcer for the Rebels. He just got back from deployment; serious shit went down, which makes me glad I never got into the military.

“Fuck yeah, it’s a pretty good sign.”

He grunts. “Well, hold that thought. I found the fuckers who beat and left my baby girl for dead. I wanna go pay them a visit. My baseball bat is ready for a coupla hit and runs.”

His baby girl is the one-year-old Pitbull, Lola, he recently adopted. He found her on the roadside, her face half chewed off after she’d been dumped by these assholes who run an illegal dog fighting ring. She was clearly used as a bait dog.

It’s sad because she’s such a nice dog, very submissive, how she trusts humans after that is beyond me.

He’s been stewing for a couple of weeks, and the poor thing is still at the vets. It wasn’t lookin’ good there for a hot minute.

“Feel like fuckin’ up some assholes?”

I give him a smirk. “Shit, yeah. When’s Lola out of the hospital?”

The only time I ever see him show any emotion is over that damn dog.

“They kept her in after the last surgery, just so her ear heals and doesn’t get infected. Or should I say, the muscle where her ear used to be, since they had to remove it.”

“I’m sorry, man. People are fucked.”

“Not as sorry as they’re gonna be. Roundin’ up Brock and a couple of dudes in town who hate this kinda shit too. She’s such a sweet little thing, wouldn’t hurt a fly. Gonna go postal on the ringleader. Whoever he is, we’ll leave him for last; he’s mine.”

I do not envy him right at this moment.

“Sometimes I hate humans,” I grunt. “They fuckin’ ruin everything.”

“Not wrong there.” He turns to me. “You still thinkin’ about joining the Rebels?”

“Gotta give it some time,” I reply. “Still gotta bit of heat from Phoenix, though.
