CHAPTER 12
Blake and I headed back to our vehicles and talked openly now that we had some privacy.
âYou need to get back in touch with MCI, this is starting to get serious.â Blake twirled his car keys around his finger and chewed at his bottom lip.
âMCI? You saw how useless they are. That guy told me I was alone on this one. I donât think theyâre going to do anything.â
âWeâre dealing with a seriously advanced warlock here, Zora. Whoâs to say how many more heâll kill? Weâve no way of stopping him, no way of predicting his patternââ
âIf this is your idea of a pep talk then it needs serious work,â I said, opening the van door and climbing in.
âYouâre right, Iâm being a little defeatist. I just donât know what hand we play next. The killer is like three steps ahead of us.â
âIf it was three steps, weâd be able to see him at least. At the moment weâre not even in the same league. Heâs Marie Kondo and Iâm a dime store bottle of bleach.â
Blake shot me a confused look. âYouâre going to have to break that analogy down for me.â
âNever mind, I suppose we should go down to the police station and speak to the aunt.â I wasnât looking forward to that part. Speaking to close family after a murder was always hard, raw emotions and charged feelingsâit was never easy. It was then however that my phone started ringing, glancing at the screen I saw the call was coming from my apartment.
âHello?â I asked.
âZora, itâs meâ¦â Mom didnât say her name or anythingâI had a feeling she was being paranoid that the lines might be tappedâbut I got the message.
âHey, is everything okay?â
âUh⦠I wouldnât say that exactly. Thereâs been a little mix up and something went wrong. You need to come right now.â
âIâm working a case, can it wait? Working quickly is the key to solving a mystery.â
She made an unusual squeaking sound. âI can appreciate that honey, but you need to come home. Thereâs been an accident.â The tone in her voice told me that this wasnât a regular call, something was seriously wrong.
âWhat is it?â I said, the hairs prickling up on the back of my neck.
Mom choked and cleared her throat. âItâs Hermes, Zora. Heâs⦠heâs dead.â
Shock hit me like a freight train, my phone slipped out of my hand and clattered across the footwell. Before I knew what was happening, I turned the keys in the ignition and put on my seatbelt.
âZora, whatâs going on?â Blake said, picking up that something was wrong.
âI have to go. Weâll pick this up tomorrow. Good night.â
With that I slammed the van door, reversed quickly out of my space and put my foot to the floor, racing home to my apartment, racing home to Hermes.
