Chapter Eight

They only had half an hour left to get breakfast before the buffet closed when Ellie woke up the next morning. The late night and interrupted sleep meant that she still felt groggy. Trying to ignore the fuzzy, groggy feeling in her head, she dressed in the most comfortable outfit she had and waited a couple minutes for Joanna to finish getting ready before heading across the hall to join Shannon and Susie. They went down to breakfast together. Ellie pushed open the door that led to the buffet room and stumbled to a halt.

Three police officers were there, and they had commandeered a couple of the breakfast tables. They appeared to be questioning people.

Ellie shot her sister-in-law a puzzled look, then pushed into the room. Another officer, one that she hadn't seen, stepped forward from next to the door.

“Can I have your names please, ma'am's?” he asked, notepad poised.

They introduced themselves one by one. “What’s this about?” Ellie asked.

“We've just got some questions to ask you, that's all. You haven't eaten yet. Go ahead and grab some food and get a table. We'll call you up when we’re ready for you.”

Ellie grabbed a waffle and some eggs even though she wasn't very hungry anymore and sat down at a table in the far corner with her friends. They watched as the police called people over one by one. Shannon was the first to go, then the others went as their names were called Eventually, it was Ellie's turn.

“Can you confirm your name and state of residence for me, please?” the young officer who was questioning her asked.

“Eleanora Pacelli. I'm from Maine.”

“A couple of other women were from Maine too. Are you part of a group?”

“Yes. My friend, Shannon, won a contest and got us all passes to this retreat.”

“I see. Congratulations. Winning something like that must have been exciting. If I’m correct, you were one of the women who found the body yesterday. I know you have already spoken to an officer about that, but would you mind telling me about it again?”

Feeling a bit more comfortable thanks to the officer’s conversational manner, Ellie began recounting her tale from the day before, trying to remember everything she could.

“Thank you,” he said. “You're here for the five-day women's retreat, correct?”

“Yes,” Ellie confirmed.

“Were you a part of the tour that took place yesterday morning?”

Not seeing where this was going, Ellie confirmed again.

“You wouldn't happen to still have the name tag you were given at the beginning of the tour, would you?”

“I think I threw it away,” Ellie said, trying to remember. “I'm not completely sure, though. I'd have to try to think back.” She just barely stopped herself from asking why he wanted it. She had enough experience with the police to know that, first of all, it was none of her business, and second of all, if they weren't telling her why, they had a good reason for it.

“I see,” he said. “Don't worry, most people I’ve spoken to had thrown theirs away.
