She expected him to come back to the house to tell her, and his family, what he had discovered, what indications the body of the unfortunate woman had given the police. In fact, she had fully expected a complete analysis of the case including all the police's information as it became available.

So when it got to ten o'clock, and he'd neither come to the house nor telephoned, Dottie was feeling quite agitated not to say downright annoyed. It was not particularly helpful when Ellie remarked mildly, ‘Well I suppose the police can't take a member of the public into their confidence, can they?’

She was on the point of huffing, ‘I'd have thought he would tell me!’ when it occurred to her very suddenly that ‘a member of the public’ was exactly what she was. She was, as always, quite forgetting that sheer nosiness was not in itself a qualification for joining the police force, and she and William had, during the course of their acquaintance, had several heated ‘discussions’ about the way she loved to involve herself in police business. It had even been one of many points in the case William had brought against Gervase Parfitt only seven weeks earlier.

Frustrated at her curiosity being unsatisfied, Dottie sank back into her chair and tried to attend to her book. Beside her, the kitten, now clean and with a very full tummy, lay sleeping peacefully on the bed made of an old jumper of William’s. Not that he knew it was an old jumper as yet. She mused that almost all his clothes needed replacing, and she began to plan what to buy, and when. How soon was it permissible to begin replacing your future husband’s entire wardrobe? Although he’d still not even proposed to her yet. She pushed it aside and tried to think about Ellie’s creepy-crawly problem.

‘I’m still none the wiser about this mystery of yours.’

Ellie was shaking her head. ‘You tried. And besides, we at least know who was behind the attacks. Now that Mrs Gresley's dead, I suppose it’s all over.’

With surprise, Dottie realised she was right. The mystery was solved, and not even by Dottie herself. She felt rather let down about it all, knowing they’d never have all the answers. They sat in silence for a while, staring at the fire.

Dottie stretched and yawned, and beside her, the kitten stretched and yawned too, blinking sleepy eyes at her before going back to sleep, his nose buried beneath his long skinny tail. Dottie was about to say goodnight, and wondered what to do with the kitten overnight, when Ellie said meditatively,

‘I wonder if there was anything of interest in the old woman's handbag,’

‘Oh, er...’ said Dottie, her mind racing. She recalled she had been going to hand it to William, but… She wondered if it was still at the tearoom.

Ellie was on her feet. ‘Right, I'm going to bed. Sleep well, Dottie, goodnight.’

‘Goodnight.’
