57 Charlie McCarthy was the dummy used by ventriloquist Edgar Bergen (father of Candice Bergen of Murphy Brown fame). Bergen achieved great success on the radio; after he made numerous appearances on the stage and other radio shows, the Charlie McCarthy Show aired from 1949 to 1955. Though the show failed to transition to television, Bergen and McCarthy were guests on many other television programs. Probably the best-known ventriloquist’s dummy in the world in 1957, Charlie’s persona was a well-dressed wiseacre.
