Chapter 11
Itâs nearly five oâclock by the time I get back to my hotel room, and as soon as I sit down, my phone begins to ring. On my caller ID, Mr. Reynoldâs name flashes across the screen. I quickly answer the phone, using the most professional voice I can manage, despite being mentally and physically exhausted from the events of the day.
âHello, sir. I was just about to call you,â I tell him, assuring him that I hadnât forgotten about our deal.
âGood afternoon, Maya. I was just calling to check up on you. I hadnât heard from you since you left and wanted to make sure you were keeping up on the preparation for the trial.â His voice is calm and low, but I can sense a subtle hint of worry in his voice. Almost as if my short break from the office is going to disrupt my ability to get justice for the victims.
âYes, sir. I plan on sending out one more round of emails to the witnesses I havenât heard from, tonight. I did, however, prepare subpoenas before I left, just in case I hadnât heard from them. I know that wasnât necessarily a route you wanted to go, but they are all set to be sent out in the event I donât hear back.â I inform him confidently, hoping to get his worries to subside.
âVery well. Are you still planning to be back to work tomorrow?â he asks inquisitively. I swear itâs almost as if he knows the answer to the question, but is insisting on testing me.
âActually, sir.â I start off slowly, trying to figure out how to explain to him whatâs going on without him getting upset. âI was assigned to be the second chair on my friendâs case. I wasnât really planning on it, but I felt I had no choice once I learned she could receive the death penalty if she is found guilty. I hope you understand.â
âI do understand, but as you can imagine I am not very happy with your choices right now. We have a major trial coming up and you are my first chair. How am I supposed to explain this to the clients? What am I supposed to tell them? That you are out galavanting around in San Diego, trying to save a friend while they are suffering from their injuries? Does that sound very professional to you?â His worries may not have subsided, but his calm demeanor certainly has. Mr. Richards isnât exactly yelling at me over the phone, but has managed to make his point crystal clear without having to raise his voice.
Forcing myself to maintain the same confident tone, I try to explain to him the importance of both cases. âSir, I swear I am not going to fall behind. We will be all set as soon as I get back, and from the way the trial is going, I donât see it lasting very long. Thereâs no need to worry, Mr. Richards. Honestly,
