Chapter Fifteen

I leave two messages for Max letting him know I’m on my way to the hotel. I try my best to look as presentable as possible. Unfortunately, the tears that continue to escape my eyes don’t make my makeup application easy.

Honestly, I feel like I’m stuck in a nightmare that I can’t wake up from. That dream I had feels even more real now, like it was a premonition or a vision. I’m beginning to wonder if Peyton was trying to send me a message, or maybe Phoebe was pleading with me not to give up on finding out the truth.

Well, I’m not giving up. I’m going to do everything in my power to find out what really happened to my friends. The reading of Phoebe’s will is in two days, and I’m praying that I get some answers there. Or at least something that will lead me in the right direction.

When I arrive at The Fountain Rose, I push my way through the photographers and into the hotel lobby. Max, Belinda, and Sami from our reservations team are at the front desk fielding questions from guests.

According to Detective Ryan, a guest found Peyton at the bottom of the east tower staircase early this morning. The east tower is off the beaten path and farther away from the guest amenities. It doesn’t get as much traffic because most guests use the elevator that goes directly to the lobby, which is much more convenient.

Max frowns when he sees me approach the counter. I’m sure I’m going to receive a lecture about being here, but I don’t care. Who would have thought my boss would demand I stay home instead of coming to work? Max finishes with a guest and motions for me to follow him. I follow his lead, and we quietly walk to his office.

“Why are you here?” he asks as soon as he closes the door behind me. “You were supposed to be taking today off.”

I stand up straight and jut out my chin. “You need me here, and I—” My lips start to tremble at the thought of Peyton. Crap, the tears are already coming, and there’s no chance I’m stopping them.

Before I know it, Max wraps his arms around me, and I let the tears fall onto his crisp white shirt. “I’m so sorry about Peyton. Such a terrible accident,” he says softly.

I pull away from his chest, forcing his massive arms to loosen around me. Thankfully, he doesn’t let me go completely.

“What if it wasn’t an accident?” I ask. “What if she was pushed down those stairs?”

Max gives me a sympathetic look. “Casey, she was wearing three-inch high-heeled shoes. The police think she either tripped or her heel got caught.”

“Or maybe someone pushed her,” I repeat.

He finally releases his arms from around me. “That sure is a heavy accusation. What makes you think someone pushed her?”

He looks confused, so I show him the texts Peyton sent me the night before. “I’m wondering if she found out something about what happened to Phoebe, and that’s why she wanted to talk to me so badly.
