Chapter Twelve

Rage poured through her, from her aching heart all the way to her tense hands. Her pulse beat in her ears. No one had ever made her as mad as she felt right then—no one. She could kill Jasper, quite literally, and she wouldn’t be sorry about it. Not one bit.

“How could you? How could you do that?” She climbed out of the van, wheeled on Bill before he even made it to the door. It didn’t matter to her right then if she woke Shianne; nothing mattered, and nothing would matter. She tried to breathe, but her breaths came in deep gasps, not quite letting her catch herself.

“Tammy—” He tried to grab for her, to pull her to him, but she was having none of that. If he wanted to hold anyone, he could go and hold Jasper; he had, after all, been on his side.

“No, Bill. Just no. How could you do that? How could you stand there and make me look stupid, make me look weak? You’re my husband. You’re meant to be on my side. You’re—”

“I am on your side.”

“No. That was not you being on my side. That was you on his side, on Jasper’s side. That was you walking away from Parker, from one of our children and leaving them to the mercy of Nick Mason. Does it not bother you? Do you even care?”

“Of course I care. Tammy, please.”

“No. Don’t please at me. Just don’t.”

She stormed into the van, thought about slamming the door but didn’t. Sure, she thought she didn’t care, but really, she didn’t want to wake Shianne, didn’t want the girl to witness her parents fighting like this, or to see the way her father had let them down. And it was that let-down that shocked her the most. In all their years of marriage, all the things they had been through, this was different. He’d never taken someone else’s side, never done that to her.

“Mum?” But Shianne did wake up. Not properly, but enough that she sat herself up, peered around the curtain.

Bill came in. Tammy was sitting on the bed, arms folded across her chest.

"It's okay, sweetheart." He bent down and eased Shianne back down before she came entirely out of sleep and was wide awake. "Back to sleep."

“I heard you and Mum.”

He stroked a hand across her hair. “Me and your mother were just discussing some things. Sorry. We’ll try to be quiet.” He kissed the top of her head, pushed her back down and pulled the sheet to her chin. “Sleep now.”

“I love you, Dad,” she said.

“Love you, too.” He watched her for a second, and then pulled the curtain back to cover the gap. Not that it offered much protection against sound. But Shianne was a deep sleeper, and hopefully, she’d go back off and stay asleep.

“Discussing? Did that look like discussing to you? It looked like me being railroaded into not doing anything, into leaving one of our children out there to fend for himself.
