CHAPTER 12
- 1 -
Alun picked Jacqui up in a taxi from a prearranged location away from prying eyes and told the taxi driver where to take them. He didn’t ask her where she wanted to go, or indeed the kind of food she liked. This place was French and really quite exclusive—he wanted to impress her because he thought she would have taste. And when they arrived and she saw where he was taking her, she had commented, “Mmm, nice.” He thought it a good start.
Now they sat opposite each other, Alun gazing at her across the table trying really hard not to look nervous. He’d never been this close to someone like her, she oozed special and he was a lowly lad from the valleys. Was he out of his depths he wondered?
She in turn was musing over just how good looking he was, but told him, “I feel a bit like a naughty school girl playing truant!”
“I wasn’t trying to generate intrigue,” he assured her, “just thought we ought to be discreet, you know, you being……..” but he trailed off because all he could think about was just how gorgeous she looked sat across the table from him.
“….being what?” She prompted when he went quiet.
He laughed at his own thoughts, he wanted to say, “being so damned beautiful,” but explained, “Well you’re my boss and I don’t want to compromise you.”
She laughed. “We’re only eating a meal,” she reminded him and immediately thought of Toni Maola saying, “It’s just a meal Jacqui,” and that’s what it had been, just a meal.
“Yes, but I wouldn’t want anyone to jump to the wrong conclusion.” He was feeling embarrassed now for saying what he had, or implying anyone could possibly think it could ever be anything more. She, he thought, could have anyone she wanted.
“That’s really good of you, Alun, are you always so considerate?” She teased.
He did blush, or at least felt a little hot. “Err, I’m not often in this kind of situation,” he told her feeling now really embarrassed and considerably out of his depth.
“I’m teasing, Alun.” She said as she caught a hint of his embarrassment.
He felt self-conscious telling himself to calm down and was saved any further embarrassment when the waiter arrived to take their order.
When the waiter left, she tried to calm him. “Relax, I’m Jacqui and right now I’m not your boss.”
“Okay, Jacqui.” That slight lilt in her name drew her even more.
“So, what about a wife and kids?”
He burst out laughing at the directness of the question. “No, none,” he confessed.
“What, never married?”
“No, never married,” he admitted and leaning into the table with that conspiratorial way he had that she liked, added, “never been close!”
This time she exclaimed, “Oh!”
He retaliated with, “So how about you?”
“Me? Good heavens,” she confessed, “I’m too married to my job.”
“Not for ever I hope.” It came out before he could stop himself and then he wished he hadn’t. She looked at him puzzled.
He changed the emphasis. “Don’t you
