Chapter Eleven

The Wolf’s master was a being that people didn’t like to mention by name. The superstition that saying his name out loud would draw his attention had led people to develop ways of speaking about him without actually saying his title: The Guide, the Oldest, the Shepherd, He Who Was, and of course, the Final Judge. These were all nicknames for one being—Death.

Xynica and Davver held their breath, waiting for the Wolf to continue. After a few moments of staring at it, Xyn’s growing irritation overrode her concern.

Biting back the question she’d really wanted to ask—What in the Void are you doing building influence in our little slum?—she asked instead, “What do you want?”

She was pleased that her survival instincts had kicked in and she’d asked a safer question. It wasn’t a good idea to get overly snippy with an immortal being created for the purpose of ushering souls from this world into the next.

“I want to prevent the end of our world,” the daemon said, entirely too casually for Xynica’s taste.

“I should start at the beginning,” it told them as if it read their confusion. “Our world was once whole.”

“What is it now?” she asked with more of a sarcastic bite than she’d intended.

“Not whole,” it told her with as much seriousness as a disembodied voice could project.

“Looks whole enough to me,” Xyn observed. Despite her best efforts she was getting aggressive, which she did when freaking out.

“Xynica,” Davver said with a quiet, steady, rational voice. Xyn crossed her arms and glared, but kept her mouth shut as the Wolf continued.

“The history of the Four and their creation of humanity is more complicated than you know,” the Wolf told them.

“Were we lied to?” Xynica whispered, afraid to say the words.

“No, what you were told is basically what happened, but that is not the entirety of it. The story of this planet begins far away in a place where stars are created. Gases, pressure, and multiple light-eating holes are needed for the complicated and volatile process.

“An ancient celestial being was transitioning into its final stages of death and accidentally drifted into a chaotic energy mass that was in the process of peak reaction. As the celestial being passed into the focal point of the new star’s conception, the being was changed in many ways, in mind and body.

“The energy that created the being was too much to hold inside its body and when it hit critical mass the explosion sent chunks of the being into this world. The blast deposited many of those pieces inside this planet. A huge piece of the world tore off on impact and went floating out into space. You know it now as the Moon. Other pieces hit the planet and pierced through time and space, creating wormholes.

“The Four Gods were infused with life in this great blast of energy. The fifth piece, their sister the Moon, was also awakened. The Four immediately tried to mend the unstable tears in our reality that had been created by the impact, but they were only able to patch them.
