Sarah shut the record and stashed it. Patra wrote no clues in the book, and she was nowhere to be found. Slim fingers tapped the desk, then a nod. She stepped into The Boogey, empty in the hour after dawn, and stood, facing the storm.
âLord Hades, I petition with a question.â
His chill arrived a second before he did, and he lounged against the bar. âKeeper. This is unexpected.â
âPatra has vanished. Do you have her?â
âStraight to the point, I see. You need to work on your pleasantries.â
âIâll make that my peacetime priority,â Sarah said. âPatra?â
âNot in the Underworld. I received an influx of unplanned humans, but thatâs tapering. Based on the missing parts, I suspect the chimera ate them. Not the most trainable of monsters.â
âFor now, not our problem. I wish I could see this storm the way Patra does.â
âIâd avoid vocalizing every random thought that strolls across your brain, Keeper. Especially those involving Uranus.â His long fingers drummed the barâs top, and Hecate shimmered into view.
âKeeper Patra is not here. I donât have her, and the other side hasnât sent crowing messages of glee over snatching her. Thoughts?â
Hecateâs torch pointed toward the ceiling. âThe lights of Eros were seen on Olympus. No idea if those events are related. However, now that weâve united with the humans, shouldnât we be planning our attack?â
âSure, if losing is the goal,â Sarah interrupted, earning a glare. âWe have to persuade each race to vote to join us. Beating the crap out of them and killing friends and allies wonât get that accomplished. We saw how combining our strengths allowed us to succeed, where using a single raceâs plan failed. Why not build on that success?â
Hecateâs glare continued unabated and Sarah let the silence stretch, before dropping to her knees. âForgive my bluntness, goddess. I meant no disrespect, but my point stands. I believe you are the perfect choice to outline and conduct the approach to the fae, a wise nation rooted deep in the creationâs beginning. While youâre more closely aligned with the witches who followed, the fae were your first children. What do you suggest we try to attract their interest in joining our side?â
âMe?â Hecateâs tone dripped bitterness. âFlitana blamed me for abandoning them. I am hated. You are puny and cannot understand the pain of tens of centuries.â
âPain is universal, goddess. Flitana lies among the fallen, waiting for redemption. Mighty Hecate, were you at fault, even in a minor way, for the rift? Could an apology open a door?â
