An hour laterâ¦
Markus stepped out of the pub to take Doyle for his afternoon walk. As he strode past the motor home, he looked at Abby and shook his head.
âYes, well, tell it to someone who cares,â she said in a sing-song voice. Abby knew she had reached her breaking point and no amount of reasoning could shake her out of it.
The mob had eventually broken up but instead of going their separate ways, theyâd all headed inside the pub and Mitch had just taken great pleasure in informing her they were holding an impromptu town meeting to decide her fate.
He grinned. âThere was mention of putting clamps on the wheels.â
Abby looked down at the salad heâd brought her. âDid anyone suggest putting me to sleep so I wouldnât be able to put up a fight when you all ambush me?â
âNo, but I think I heard someone mention a tranquillizer gun. Your idea is better. I wish Iâd thought of it. Then someone else suggested rowing you to the middle of the lake where you could rock the boat to your heartâs content.â
Joshua stepped out of the pub and loosened his tie.
He looked worn out.
Grabbing her phone, she was about to call him but he beat her to it.
âI saved your neck, Abby Maguire. You owe me.â
Abby yelped. âSurely, thatâs an exaggeration.â
âIn your dreams. Iâm on my way to have a talk with Dr. Pitt. This canât go on like this. Everyone is demanding answers.â
âHello.â Abby put her hand up. âIâm the one stuck in quarantine and Iâve been demanding answers to no avail.â
âYou should have tried harder.â
She leaned forward and looked toward the door. âSo, why isnât the mob coming out?â
âI won the Christmas ham as a reward for bringing you in but, as a police officer, I couldnât accept it. So, I donated it back. Now, everyone is waiting for Mitch to draw the winner. Anyway, Iâll talk to you later.â
She turned to Mitch. âI guess you should go back inside before they all come out and drag you in. You donât want to aggravate them.â
She had a solid half hour of relative peace and quiet, only scratching once during that time.
Then Faith called her from the office.
âDid you finally recover?â Abby asked.
âTo quote you, mock me all you want. Havenât you ever been obsessed with a singer or a movie star?
Abby wanted to say she had no trouble telling the difference between reality and fictional wishful thinking, but she knew that would only hurt and upset Faith.
âMy mom will be the first to tell you Iâm an odd little creature. I never even had posters on my bedroom wall.â Abby scanned the street. âIâm surprised youâre not attending the impromptu town meeting at the pub.â
âIâm on your side, Abby. But you shouldnât have taken off the way you did. You nearly gave Mitch a heart attack. He couldnât talk for a full five minutes.â
âSorry, but my instinct to follow a story got the better of me.â
âWhat story? Suspicious Nature?â
âNo,â Abby said, her tone puzzled.
