The next morning Mom drove me to school.

I knew I had to be honest with my friends. This was not going to be fun.

Groaning, I pressed my forehead to the car window.

Mom glanced back. “You okay?”

I could at least tell my mom.

So I spilled it all. I told her about our Cory routine for Ms. Ruiz and how we weren’t ready. I told her about Stella and how I didn’t know how to help her.

My mom nodded. “Help is a funny thing, kiddo. Your sister loves being there for you. It’s who she is. And you know what? I’m willing to bet that Ms. Ruiz feels the same way.”

I frowned, thinking. “She did seem sad when we told her we didn’t need any help.”

“You’re already helping Stella, just by being there for her. And Ms. Ruiz? She likes teaching you guys. She’s not going to care if your routine isn’t perfect. The best way to show her you care about her is to use what she has helped you learn. Whatever that is.”

I slung my backpack over my shoulder as we pulled up to school. Maybe Mom was right. But Ms. Ruiz hadn’t helped us with Cory. We hadn’t let her. Was it too late to show her what she had taught us?
