Experience had taught me that the best way to coax anything productive out of my nagging subconscious voice was to engage in something physical, something that would take my mind completely off the matter at hand. I pulled on a pair of jogging shorts, running shoes, and a tank shirt, checked myself in the mirror as I taped a small Beretta Minx pistol into my waistband and departed the hotel for a cheap fix of endorphins.

I had no destination in mind, but I gravitated to the foot of the Venice pier, about two miles away. The oppressive heat that had enveloped southern California over the past week had dissipated, but I was soaking wet in no time, nevertheless.

I cooled down by walking the length of the pier, enjoying the cool sea breeze. I watched as the waves approached the pilings beneath my feet, smelled the saline mist as they continued on to their final rumbling break along the fine white sand of the beach behind me.

The sounds of children laughing mixed with the cries of gulls, wafted on the breeze in the wake of crashing waves. The sounds spoke to something inside me and calmed my unsettled self as I turned to make my way back the way I had come, to the foot of the pier.

Without thinking, I pulled up short, stared at the spot where Patti Courson’s body had been found.

Where is the sonofabitch now?

I walked over to the place on the sand where I had first seen her, and stood silently, imagining that it was dark, picturing what it must have looked like in the early morning hours as her body was being dumped on the desolate beach, only to be discovered by strangers. I looked around to locate the nearest lights, tried to imagine how much of it would have penetrated the dark stretch of beach between two key points of light: at the street corner, and there at the foot of the pier.
