Xavier stood in the armory checking over what appeared to be the weapons confiscated from last night’s raid. Iona walked ahead of me and right up to him. He didn’t even look up as she approached. Xavier continued to clean the current rifle in his hands as if we weren’t even there. Iona cringed as she took a few more steps closer. She looked like she’d been sent to the principal’s office and I hid a smirk as I turned away for a second.

Iona cleared her throat, but Xavier took no notice. She did it louder, and the old fae’s brow twitched. “I uh, I know you’re busy this morning,” Iona finally said, “but you’re right about last night. Came to apologize for being a pain in the ass.”

Xavier set the rifle aside and looked her square in the eye. “From the minute I took you under my wing, I knew you’d be a pain in the ass. It’s why I trained you myself. Why I was so damned hard on you. If I want to be perfectly honest, yes you made a mistake last night, but Iona, I’m damned proud of you, girl.”

Iona beamed back at him as he coughed and huffed, quickly looking away from her. “Thank you, Xavier.”

“Right, now then, Jig has picked up some chatter on a supply line heading south.”

“Actually, we need to go back to the camp we were at last night,” Iona told him. “We didn’t finish our mission, and you always taught me to never leave loose ends.”

“Tell Jig and the others. The supply line can wait one more day.” Iona nodded and went to leave him when he said her name. “If we catch wind of Venkalth and there’s a chance we can take him out successfully, I will not keep the intel from you. You have my word, Iona, but you cannot do as you did last night. Do you understand me?”

“Yes, sir.”

“And your symptoms?”

Iona’s shoulders tensed at his question, and I sensed her sudden shift in mood. “None so far.”

Xavier’s gaze slid to me, and I bowed my head in confirmation of her words. The Guild master’s eye twitched, but he waved us away. “Good, get going then.”

Once we were out on the main street listening to thunder rumble in the distance from the storm that had carried on into the morning hours, I caught Iona’s hand. “You’re not having any issues, right?”

“You tell me?”

Her eyes were clear and bright, staring back at me. I hadn’t noticed her taking too long to respond to me or anyone else who spoke with her. My hand slipped from her arm to her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “Feel that?”

“Felt it last night,” she replied with a wink that set my blood on fire. “Promise I’m fine. Whatever tonic Tennyson gave me I think it’s working. Giving me the time I need. Stop worrying, Aiden. With any luck, it’ll knock the venom out of my system completely.” She grinned as she added cheekily, “Think you could learn a thing or two from this goblin.
