Luke had been trying to reach Queen, Mark’s alleged mistress, for two days. She’d been difficult to find. When she picked his call, she was evasive. He had to use all his charm to convince her to meet him. She shared her address.

The Velum Apartments were less fancy than Luke expected. Tucked away amongst the more luxury high rises in Northville, its seven floors stood out for its faded cream wall paint.

He confirmed his suspicions when he found the lift wasn’t working. He had to make the slow climb to the fourth floor. The corridors were at least illuminated despite having little natural sunlight coming in. He knocked on the door of Apartment B14.

A peep hole opened in the middle of the door and a young woman’s voice filtered through.

“Who is it?” she asked.

“Luke. We spoke on the phone.”

A woman in her early twenties opened. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail. She wore a fitting top and jeans, accentuating her curvy figure. She gave him the once over as if to confirm he wasn’t a threat, then stepped aside.

“Come in,” Queen said.

Her apartment was small but decent. Sparsely furnished, she had a settee and bean bags for furniture. A large flat TV hung on the wall, flanked by hefty speakers. The opposite wall had a colourful abstract painting. A round carpet covered the centre of the floor.

“Make yourself comfortable,” she said. “You want anything?”

“Tea?” he asked.

“I don’t drink tea. So maybe apple juice or water?” she offered.

“Water sounds good,” Luke replied.

Queen got a drinking glass from the cabinet, walked over to the water dispenser, and filled it up. She handed it to him.

“So, you’re a private investigator, you said?” Queen asked.

“Yes, and I’m here to help you,” Luke replied. “Have you spoken to the police yet?”

“Not yet. Am I supposed to?” Queen asked. “I don’t need that right now.”

“Well, that’s why I’m here. So that you don’t have to,” Luke said.

“Okay. What would you like to know?” Queen asked.

“We only touched on this on the phone, but it’s clear that you knew Mark,” Luke said.

Queen nodded without a word.

“Do you want to tell me about that?” Luke asked, avoiding a leading question that would make her more defensive.

“We met at a friend’s house party. My friend was leaving the country and asked us to celebrate with them. During the party, Mark walked up to me as I hung out with a few friends. We exchanged numbers and everything else started from there,” Queen said.

“What do you mean by everything?” Luke asked.

Queen sighed. “We got to know each other better. He liked me, I liked him. We got close.”

“Did you know he was married?” Luke asked.

Queen shook her head. “No. He never wore a wedding ring and never talked about his wife. We were just connecting and enjoying ourselves. It was a difficult time for me when we met, as I’d just started looking for a job after college. So he helped me out a lot.”

He could hear her voice getting shaky, but he wasn’t sure if it was out of fear or loss.
