We watched Rufus get in his car and drive away. Then I took down my wards and we went in the house.
âDo you want some tea?â I asked. âOrâ¦â
Collum pulled me against him and kissed me deeply.
When we came up for air, I said, âI was gonna suggest lunch, but this is fine.ââ He smiled, and his lips came down on mine again. I stretched my arms up and wrapped them around his neck. He fitted his hands to my butt and pulled me closer. I dropped my hands to the front of his jeans.
We were too far gone to make it to the bedroom. The sofa was not as comfortable, but it was more convenient.
âWell,â I said, when we were both spent.
âI missed you,â he said.
âI guess you did,â I said with a laugh. Then my smile faded. âListen, Collum. I need to have a way to contact you.â
âWhy?â
âBecause there were a thousand times that I thought to myself, âI need to remember to tell Collum this,â and now Iâve forgotten all of them.â
âA thousand? Really?â
âMaybe not a thousand. But hundreds of times.â
âHundreds is a lot.â He planted kisses slowly down my neck.
âIt is,â I agreed.
âYou taste so good,â he said. âLike a cool drink of water.â He captured my nipple with his lips and teased it with his tongue.
A sigh escaped me. âAre we gonna do this again already?â
âNo time like the present,â he said, and reached lower.
Many minutes later, he said, âNow Iâm hungry.â
I laughed at him. âI could cook something. Or we could order in.â
He nodded. âThose are the typical choices.â He glanced at me. âOr I could cook you something.â
âYou can cook? Youâre a man of many talents,â I said, tracing circles on his stomach.
We lay there, pressed together on the sofa, for another few minutes. Then he sighed. âIf we donât get dressed, weâll never eat.â
âIâm okay here for a while yet. Youâre the one whoâs hungry.â
He sat up and maneuvered to one end of the sofa. I scooted around and tucked my feet under me.
âIt was really hard for me to leave the other night,â he said. âReally hard.â
âYou could have stayed,â I said.
âI know. Butâ¦â He leaned forward and put his forearms on his knees. âIâve just been at this for so long on my own.â
I frowned. âIâm not sure what you mean.â
He looked up at me. âI have certain things Iâm responsible for. Things I need to keep watch over every day. I just canât be away for too long. I donât know what would happen ifâ¦â
I was still in the dark. âAre we talking about you staying over, or something else?â
He raised his hands and dropped them again. âThis idea of us all getting together and fighting whatever it is. I feel like if we do that, itâll mean Iâm a failure.â He looked up at me again. âI donât think Iâm explaining myself very well.â
âNo, I think I get it,â I said slowly. âIf you need help, it feels like youâre a failure.
