ELISE

Lights flashed as screams of glee melded with the rhythmic notes of the live band playing on a pop-up stage at the entrance to the pier. The carnival ran every summer. There were rides and games. The scent of popcorn and fried dough filled the air from colorful tents with food and local beer. Elise’s summer dress billowed against her legs in the warm breeze.

Roman’s hand slipped into hers, his rough skin against her soft palm. “Where should we start?”

She glanced at him. He’d chosen an olive-colored short-sleeve shirt that hugged his lean muscles, and a pair of camouflage shorts with high-top Converse. Her stomach fluttered nervously. They’d had sex multiple times and, as backwards as it was, this was their first date.

“I don’t know.”

“What’s your favorite ride?” Roman asked, holding up the strip of tickets he’d purchased for them.

“I’ve never ridden any.”

He stopped, turning to her with his eyebrows drawn together in an incredulous look. “You’ve never been to the carnival?”

She shrugged. “Once, but it wasn’t for long and I didn’t get to ride anything.”

“You said you grew up in Dark Cove. How could you not come for the fun? Not even on dates in high school?”

She swallowed and looked towards the teens throwing darts at balloons at one of the games. “I didn’t date in high school.”

“We’re fixing that. We’re riding everything.” Roman tugged her hand, leading her towards the line for the closest ride, which happened to be giant teacups.

“We don’t have to—”

“Don’t worry. I know it’s your first time. I’ll be gentle.” He smirked.

“Am I on a date with Ricky all of a sudden?” she teased.

He barked out a laugh. “It was too easy. Alright, ready to get dizzy?”

“That doesn’t sound so fun.”

He handed the tickets to the bored-looking pimple-faced teen running the ride. “It’s Ariel’s favorite.”

She followed him into a giant teacup, sitting beside him. He buckled her in and placed his hand around her shoulders.

“If Ariel likes it, I suppose it can’t be too bad.” She swallowed down her nerves.

“Exactly. You need to know your stuff for when we take her back here together. I mean, if you want to come with us?” he asked.

“I would love that.” She smiled.

The cup started moving and she gripped his thigh, her other hand holding onto the circle in the center of the cup. Around and around they spun.

Roman’s hard scruff scratched her cheek as he leaned in and kissed her cheek. “Having fun yet?”

She laughed. “Yes.”

“Then you’ll probably like this next part.” Roman gripped the center and moved it so the cup spun in a circle too.

“Oh my goodness!”

Lights swirled around them as the ride twirled them around and around. Her vision blurred until the only thing she could focus on was the heat of his body against her side. Elise’s hand tightened on his thigh. Her skin prickled with the heavy weight of his gaze on her. Light and free for what seemed like the first time in forever, Elise laughed.

Slowly, the spinning wound down to a stop.
