Chapter 13

When we get back, Kira asks to be let out by the gate so she can speak with Nora, who just so happens to be parked out front. I valiantly resist the temptation to tag along. I’m sure she’ll make the introduction when the time is right. Hopefully, she’s picked a better mate than I did. Given the circumstances, though, that shouldn’t be all that difficult.

Nicholas wheels into his space in the parking garage and heads off to the woodshop to work on a dining table. Which leaves me with a few hours to kill before dinner, and with Justine still handling the fallout from yesterday’s outage, they won’t include her.

On my way out of the garage, a headache starts to kick in. The pressure behind my right eye builds as I climb the stairs to the ninth floor. Where most people can pop a couple of aspirin to make the discomfort go away, I’m forced to visit Mir to see what the problem is.

Sure, I’ve had headaches before, but they’re normally right after I’ve had my ass handed to me. To the best of my knowledge, that hasn’t happened today. True, I did lose my temper this morning, which is pretty unusual, but that’s the only thing out of the ordinary. Okay, not the only thing—I can see through glamours, and glyphs are now in my visible spectrum, but that shouldn’t cause this much distress.

The closer I get to the lab, the harder it is for me to focus. My stomach’s doing flipflops, and an overwhelming dread washes over me. I stop in the middle of the hall, and I suddenly don’t want to go on. My vision flickers, and a sharp, stabbing pain shoots through my skull. Staggering, I place my hands against the wall for support and, with a great deal of effort, stay upright. My eyelids slam closed. I let out a low groan and fight back the bile caught in my throat.

When I open my eyes, the world is slightly askew.

I run a hand over my face to wipe away the sweat, and when I cover my left eye, everything goes dark. Struggling, I pull out my phone and turn on the front camera. The brilliant blue iris of my right eye is covered in an opaque white film, rendering it useless. If that isn’t bad enough, there’s nothing but static when I call out to Mir, almost as if the Nexus is broadcasting, but there’s no one at the helm.

I liked it better when the whole network shut down. This white noise is creepy as hell.

It takes a second to work up the energy to push myself off the wall and wobble over to lean against the door. It slides open, allowing me to ever-so-gracefully tumble face-first onto the floor. I crawl to the nearest chair, pull myself up to my knees, and manage to stand. Swaying on the spot, I scan the room. Empty.

A surge of power inside the Nexus hits me with a sucker punch to the inside of my skull.
