CHAPTER SIXTEEN

When the dinner bell rang and everyone piled their plates high with more greasy, fried, hearty Scottish food, the kitchen was silent. Even the support team kept their mouths shut, which was saying a lot for Idina’s former unit members, and that was only because everyone was so busy staring at Trigger and Edgars. Nobody tried to hide it.

The silence followed them into the small mess, through everybody taking their seats and setting down their plates, and the first five minutes of eating their meal together. Included in that expectant silence tonight was Briggs, who’d chosen to eat with the rest of his team so he wouldn’t miss a thing that was said. Even Lieutenant Beattie joined them in the cozy room filled with tables, but he was probably the only one there who didn’t look up from his plate every five seconds to pressure Trigger and Edgars into talking.

After ten minutes of everyone eating in nearly complete silence, the tension was almost unbearable.

Idina stuck a forkful of mutton in her mouth and chewed, glancing up at Trigger again. I thought for sure she would’ve cracked by now. Edgars can go forever without talking.

Badge cleared her throat in a way that didn’t sound even remotely natural.

Stop leaned back in his chair, alternating between bouncing his rubber ball on the floor beside him and taking bites of food with his other hand.

Wilson’s knee bounced frantically under the table in anticipation.

“Do you mind?” Trigger growled as she stabbed a large bite of food onto her fork. “I’m trying to eat.”

If anyone else had been watching the scene from the outside, they would have thought she was talking to either Cake, Chandler, or Stop, because they were right there with her at her table. The rest of the combined team knew it was an open question addressed to the entire room, but it wasn’t their job to say anything about it. Stop merely bounced his ball a few more times in quick succession, and Chandler sucked something out of his teeth with an obnoxiously loud smack of his lips.

Finally, Trigger’s fork clattered onto her plate, and she sat up straight in her chair, spreading her arms. “Okay, what the fuck do you want?”

The question was for everyone in the room, and she made that clear by sweeping her irritated glare across every face in her immediate view.

Edgars sat at a completely different table and didn’t seem nearly as affected by all the tension and curiosity.

The rest of the team kept eating, although everybody looked at Trigger or gazed at Edgars, waiting for someone to start talking about what their smaller side mission had accomplished or possibly ruined.

“That’s what I thought,” Trigger muttered as she snatched up her fork again.

“Mission debrief, Trig,” Briggs said flatly.

“For fuck’s sake!” Her fork clattered even more violently onto her plate again, then she slumped back in her chair and glared at her half-eaten dinner. “We’re off-duty.”

“You didn’t come straight to me after storming the castle.” The sergeant smirked a little at his convenient play on words, then nodded.
