TWELVE

NASH

“You know, I could’ve borrowed a pair of my mom’s maternity pants for you.”

She snorted and the snickerdoodle cookie in her mouth sprayed out like hail all over our table. I laughed but then in a strange panic she started picking up the crumbs and putting them back in her mouth—and I just lost it. I laughed so hard my throat burned and sent me into a coughing fit. Tears ran from the corners of my eyes.

This girl. This girl is a riot.

Torren Chase was already one of my favorite people I’d ever met, and it’d only been three days. I didn’t know if it was a jinn thing or a Torren thing, but she just had no filter. And she didn’t seem to care. She danced to her own tune without a care in the world. Unless you spooked her or put her on the spot . . . then she turned into an animal and bolted.

The Christmas cookie contest was outside in the park where everyone felt welcome to participate. The crowd was huge. I always seemed to forget how many people liked this event. There had to be fifty people who entered their cookies for the contest, some of them teams of two or more people and some were entire families. People all huddled around our table . . . and all of them were now waiting on us to pick a winner.

As soon as we picked the top three winners, the cookies were open to the public to eat.

Every time Torren moaned as a cookie hit her tongue, the crowd grew more and more impatient. And entertained. Especially since Torren insisted she had to eat the entire cookie and not just a bite—because that was the true test.

She was definitely the right replacement for my twin.

I felt a twinge of guilt for thinking it, but Mateo stopped letting his hair down a while ago. He was young and already turning into a sequel of Constantine. Torren was the exact opposite, which I supposed was a big draw for some people. But opposites attract was not my style, and I doubted it was Mateo’s either. It would be interesting to see him beside her.

She let out a ragged breath and leaned back in her chair.

“You okay there?” I wiped the last few tears from my face and cleared my throat. “Do you require medical assistance.”

“More like interference.” She groaned and put both hands on her belly. “You should’ve brought me the pants.”

“You’re considering unbuttoning your pants right now, aren’t you?”

She breathed so heavily it reminded me of a pregnant woman’s contractions during labor. “If I kill you right now, it’s a crime of passion. I can plead insanity. Everyone will buy it.”

“I’ve taken my mom to Lamaze classes—”

“I will turn into a bear and eat you.”

I snorted and shook my head. “You should’ve listened to me when I said come with an empty stomach.”

“It’s not my fault.” She cringed. “Your mom came over and made me breakfast. What was I supposed to do, kick her out?”

“She is a force to be reckoned with.
