Interfering

MY ONE WEEK anniversary of being in Florida starts very uneventfully. I am now able to make my way around a little in my new SUV. Places and landmarks are starting to look familiar.

Of course, I can’t shop unless Brett is with me.

We shopped yesterday until school let out, then we went to the tuxedo rental place and managed to rent Ricky a tux for the prom. Then we all had dinner again before taking Ricky home.

This morning Brett had a meeting with the people helping to sponsor his trip to Peru. We agreed to meet at noon at a quaint shopping area a little north of Hampton Cove.

I pull into the parking lot a few minutes early. I’m still a little behind on the daily spending. But I know I can catch up with a couple of full days roaming the stores.

It all seems so useless and wasteful. I don’t know if I’ll ever wear all these shoes and clothes and jewelry. That crazy expensive necklace I bought to wear in the wedding now will not be worn at the wedding. I guess I can wear emeralds at any time, but Brett and I both thought it would look great with that dress.

Maybe I’ll buy a new comforter and sheets for the room here at the mansion. Maybe a white set so PS’s fur won’t be seen.

Even with the blanket on the bed, the brown comforter isn’t fairing so well.

I decide to do a little window shopping until Brett arrives. I’m becoming so used to this warm weather. In a good way. I’m sure I’ll miss it when I return to Atlanta. Even in May the ATL still has some pretty cool nights at times.

I’m walking next to the shops when I hear Anastasia’s voice.

“Well, if it isn’t the poor little rich shopper. Spending our money wisely, dear sister?”

I turn around and come face to face with not only Anastasia, but her mom also. Lovey’s scowl looks like it’s hurting her face. Anastasia, on the other hand, avoids looking directly at me. They both are carrying large white bags which are overflowing with everything green and gold. Flowers, ribbons, cloths. I’m not sure what all they have, but they have a lot of it. Lovey’s forearms look strained.

Maybe the painful-looking expression on her face has nothing to do with the scowl, and more to do with the weight of the bags.

“Can I take that for you?” I offer.

“We don’t need your help,” Anastasia says, pursing her lips together after she speaks.

“Speak for yourself, Anastasia.” Lovey looks at me. “Our car is a little ways up. I’d appreciate your help with this bag.”

“Sure.”

I barely speak the word before Anastasia stomps off. Lovey and I follow behind, unable to catch up to her if we wanted to.

“That girl is headstrong and impulsive,” Lovey says.

As much as I’d like to, there is no way I’m voicing my agreement with that statement.

“That comes straight from her father,” Lovey continues.

It takes all I have not to stop the momentum of my steps as she mentions Antonio.
