Checking the local topo map, Sam found that the abandoned fire tower overlooked the small valley. Sam decided to surveil the early Saturday morning aircraft activity from there.
Late in the evening before the next expected arrival, Sam made his way to the fire tower by way of a circuitous route through the small hamlet of Bearfield, down Stewart Road, to Hogstack Run Road, and up Cookâs Run Road. The route was several miles longer than the direct route, but it kept him well away from the roads that led directly to the drop site.
Climbing the tower was very dangerous, as many of the steps were rotten and barely held Samâs weight. From the fire tower Sam watched the wing lights of a two-engine plane approach the drop area. Sam raised his camera to begin recording. The drop site lights suddenly turned on, and the plane quickly descended and made a sharp turn. Three large bundles were shoved out the side door and fluttered to the ground, landing in puffs of dirt. It was about 1:30 in the morning.
A vehicle stood in the center of the drop site, surrounded by a number of men, three of whom ran to pick up the packages. Sam panned his camera to capture the action.
Suddenly, several rifle-muzzle flashes by the Land Rover preceded the thud, thud, thud of three bullets hitting the fire tower roof. Sam dropped to his knees and immediately realized his mistake. If he could see the men at the drop site, they could probably see the reflection of the light on his camera lens. Apparently, they did not want to be observed.
The Land Rover started to move toward the fire tower. Sam figured he only had a two-minute head start, so he ran for his life. Luckily, he stashed his car over a mile away. Samâs advantage was that he knew these woods like the back of his hand. Quickly descending the tower, one of the first steps gave way and Sam fell through. He wrenched his knee and caught his rib cage on the step below, saving him from falling further. Pulling himself up, he wasted no time descending the rest of the stairs. He headed straight north into the trees, away from the road, and down the valley toward Cookâs Run Creek but kept clear of Cookâs Run Road. His knee throbbed, and his ribs complained with each breath, but the adrenaline rush and Samâs sheer panic kept him moving quickly.
No trails existed in the area, but Sam spent much of his life chasing deer in these hills, and he knew how to move quickly and quietly even in thick brush. He eventually found the creek that led to a possible refuge. Half way up the long ridge above the creek, he found the old wooden lean-to built by his brother, John, along with other members of William Shylerâs Boy Scout Troop. It looked like little more than a pile of sticks. Shaking from exhaustion, Sam crawled into the shelter.
