Chapter 25

The pub was a three-story brick building with wooden letters painted gold announcing the name BRANNIGAN’S above the door. There were a half-dozen tables out front, actually on the street. The tables were fenced off by planter pots filled with flowers.

Dillon was twenty minutes early when he walked into the crowded pub. He hadn’t taken five steps into the place when a familiar voice called, “Hey, Dillon, you right plonker. Over here.” He glanced over, and there was Suel, already seated at a table with a glass of Guinness in front of him.

Dillon headed over and said, “I was sure I was gonna beat you here. Have you been in here long?”

Suel glanced at his pint of Guinness, nearly full, suggesting he’d been there only long enough for a sip or two.

“Get you something?” a server asked as Dillon sat down.

“Yeah, thanks. I’ll have a pint of Guinness. Paddy?”

“Good for now, mate,” Suel said.

“God, I can’t believe it’s shaping up for us to have a quiet Saturday,” Dillon said as he glanced around the place.”

“Don’t say that too loud, or all hell is bound to break,” Suel said. “You think it might be because of the alerts they sent out?”

“It would be nice if that was the case, but I don’t know.”

“Well, I know they ran on RTÉ 1, Virgin Media, TG4, and Sky News for about a minute and a half, complete with the images of your two favorite knackers. That’s potentially a lot of viewers.”

Dillon nodded. “Even just running on one of those stations would be a huge increase in awareness. I guess I’m looking at it like this; no matter how many or how few saw it, that’s more than before the broadcast. Now, if the banks will just cop on and alert their employees, you’d think they would be the first to want that information.”

The server arrived with Dillon’s pint. He handed her a ten euro note and said, “Keep the change.”

“There you go again, Dillon. Spoiling it for the rest of us.”

Dillon shook his head. “As I was saying, now, if the banks would alert their employees.”

“Yeah, I know what you mean. I just expect these two knackers to change what they’ve been doing up until now. Maybe they’ll dress up like women or even Garda officers.”

“Mmm-mmm, I think you’re right, but if they do that, we’ll send out another press release. They keep this up, and sooner or later, we have to be able to nail their ass.”

“One can only hope. So how did last night work out for you?”

“Good, we ate at a really nice little restaurant in Skerries called Piccolo. Delicious Italian food, nice and quiet, then back to Noreen’s for a glass of wine and the main event.”

“I’m glad it seems to be working out,” Suel said with a nod.

“Yeah, me too. Obviously, if you’re dating you or me for any length of time, your patience is going to be sorely tested.”

“Yeah, true, and that’s just dealing with our personalities, to say nothing of us working in Special Branch,” Suel said and raised his glass.
