The raider on the wall proved less of a problem than the others because both Vivy and Viggo managed to hit him with arrow and spear respectively before he could react. Vivy shot him from under cover, and Viggo hit him when he ran in a straight line to get to that cover.

With the raider half-dead already, finishing him proved no great obstacle, and Viggo was relieved to take no injury in the effort.

Once Vivy claimed the experience, as she'd done for all their victories, a broad smile lit her features as she joyfully said, "I leveled!"

"You what? What does that mean?" Viggo asked, raising an eyebrow.

Vivy gave him an exasperated look and said, "You've leveled too, dummy. Haven't you been checking your experience?"

"No? Why would ... how do you know I've uh, leveled?"

"Because we're in a party together! I get half the experience, you get the other half, and we both started at level one. You probably leveled before I did; it'll be in the log. Why aren't you ..."

She trailed off, obviously taking in his blank incomprehension, then said, "You know what? Just ... open your system access."

He did, and noticed that most of the menus were highlighted, indicating changes. He had become accustomed to seeing the plus signs in front of certain characteristics due to the presence of a character point in his inventory, but now all of his statistics had it, though none of the numbers had changed. His strength was still twelve, dexterity fourteen, constitution eleven, intelligence sixteen, willpower ten, presence and comeliness both eight.

None of his defense ratings had changed, nor did they appear to be directly alterable.

Reminded of such things, he asked, "Did the loot from any of those guys include their gambesons?"

"Yes? Do you want one?" Vivy asked, glancing over at him. From the attitude of her hands, she was looking over her own characteristics just as he was.

Nodding, he said, "Any armor is better than the none I've got now."

Vivy dropped her hands, a gambeson appeared in them, and she offered it to him. He dropped the cloth out, holding it by the shoulders, and noticed a few things. The first and most important was that it was clean. There were no stains — blood or otherwise — on the undyed fabric. There were a few rips and tears from the damage, however.

He dropped the armor over his head and put it on, then checked the system again. Physical defense had gone from zero to one. Magical defense was still zero. Heat defense was now negative two, while cold defense had gone up to six from four.

As he considered the numbers along with the additional weight, he wondered if a single point of armor was even worth the effort. The only reason he didn't take it off again was because he knew how effective gambesons were. At the very least, the cloth would help protect his privates and reduce the depth of future injuries .
