Riley felt heâd been pretty calm up until now, knowing that the Blackstones, by their very nature, were trouble magnets. His aunt had pretty much said so. And heâd had to agree. But heâd let his love for Melody guide him and been as accepting as he could be.
But things werenât exactly going well. Mama D and Melody were in Fairy, David was unconscious in a vampire sleep, and now Ginger was gone through a portal that had closed up the second she disappeared.
Jason was talking to Daphne, and though Riley could hear Jason, he couldnât hear the other side. Did he have a mic in his ear or something?
âRiley.â Jason motioned him to follow, and they crunched through the snow to the back door of Mama Dâs house. Jason pulled a key from a loose brick, and they went inside. One look at the fireplace in the den and Riley knew he needed to start a fire. He got to work on the wood and within ten minutes had a roaring fire going.
Jason had disappeared into the house and finally returned with blankets and coats. âI knew Mama Donahue had a few things that might fit you. Father Donahue was a big man.â
âShe was married?â
âNo, her father. Iâm sure she was marriedâ¦maybeâ¦to someone other than Father Christmas.â He brought a kettle out of the kitchen and hung it on a hook to the right of the fireplace. âSettle down for a bit so I can tell you what Daphne said. We need a third brain for this.â
âOkay.â Riley grabbed a few blankets and sat beside the fireplace. âYou were talking about the flowers of the portals?â
âYeah. Daphne believes the ring of the portal signifies where it goes. Toadstools mean Fairy. And the clovers mean Caer Arianrhod.â
âCarââ
âCaer. Say it like care. Arianrhod. Thatâs the castle where the kings stay after they are defeated. She takes care of them and nurses them back to health. I remember hearing a lot about the Oak King staying there, but not the Holly King. Now, while that doesnât really mean much to me or you, to the myths, itâs a huge clue.â
âWhat is?â
âYou were here when Nick came through the portal. The one Ginger just disappeared through.â
âNo. I was with Melody.â
Jason sighed. âThatâs right. Daphne thinks it was a portal to Caer Arianrhod, which mean thatâs where Nickolas came from.â
Riley shook his head slowly. âI feel like Iâm missing something. Is it wrong heâd come from there? You just said thatâs where the kings go to heal.â
âYeah, but Nickolas is king now. He has no need of Caer Arianrhod, or the queen. Daphneâs not even sure the present king is allowed into the kingdom while the previous king heals.â
âWhy not?â
Jasonâs shoulders slumped. âIâm trying to understand this myself. I know it seems pretty far-fetched that this sort of thing happens, or even exists, but then I look at my own existence and realize there are stranger things on Earthâ¦â The fire moved the shadows over his features.
