Chapter 10

“I think Sierra has bonded with Doris,” Rory said later that evening after I’d walked Doris back to her cabana following a delightful visit. “Other than to head upstairs to feed her babies, she barely left Doris’ side the entire evening.”

“I noticed that Doris seemed quite smitten with Sierra as well,” Emily said as she sipped on her tea. “Sierra looked right at her when she spoke to her, and it seemed that each time Doris felt tears coming on as she shared the details of her adventures with Harold, she’d reach down and pet the dog. I found myself wondering if maybe Doris isn’t the human Sierra is looking for.”

“The two do seem to find comfort in each other,” I agreed. “I suggested that she might consider getting an older dog for companionship, and Doris said she’d consider it, but Sierra is a young dog. She’ll quite possibly outlive Doris, and if Doris does end up going into an assisted living facility, I’m not sure she’d be able to take Sierra along.”

“I suppose Doris could work out something ahead of time,” Rory commented as she picked a cookie up and nibbled on one end. “A lot of our clients have godparents for their pets.”

“Godparents?” Emily asked.

“Basically, they make arrangements for their pet before they even adopt that spells out who will take over custody of the beloved family member if they pass away or are unable to continue caring for the pet at any point.”

“I like that idea,” I said. “I really think having a companion would make all the difference for Doris. It must be so lonely rambling around her little house with no one to talk to.” I got up to grab a cup of coffee since I was the sort who preferred coffee to tea, even in the evening. “I’ll bring it up during dinner tomorrow.”

“It was really nice of you to offer to take her to the steak house for her anniversary dinner,” Emily said. “When you suggested it, I thought she was going to cry.”

“She would have had Sierra not given her a big kiss on the cheek at exactly that moment,” Rory pointed out.

“I’m happy to fill in for Harold. Doris is a very nice woman who’s going through the hardest thing she’s ever had to go through, and she’s really interesting as well. I almost spit out my wine when she started in with her story about the lovesick sheik and the harem she almost found herself being forced into. I mean, if that had actually occurred, the whole thing would have been tragic and not at all funny, but hearing her tell the story all these years later was hysterical.”

“I guess it was a good thing that Harold understood the culture and was able to negotiate a deal,” Emily chucked. “You know,” she added, “maybe I’ll make a Thanksgiving Tree for Doris. There’s just something about jotting down all the things you’re thankful for in your life and putting them on a tree.
