Leo Goldberger (left) and his older brother, Milan, appear in this photo taken in 1934.

The neighbor’s quick thinking had saved them. But the Gestapo did not leave. The police waited outside the apartment building. After spending the night in their cellar’s bomb shelter, Goldberger and his two oldest sons joined the remaining family members in their rented summerhouse near Helsingør.

Two or three weeks later, the country seemed to return to normal. Except for the fact that the military was in control rather than civilian officers, Denmark appeared much the same as it had for the past two years. Leo’s father thought it was safe to return to Copenhagen. As a cantor, he needed to be at the synagogue for the Rosh Hashanah celebration about two weeks away.
