Chapter Nine

CAMERON

As they entered the apartment building, Cameron cloaked them. He mentally compelled the security guard to follow, and they all entered the elevator together.

“Shhh, stay still.” Cameron stood at the far side of the elevator against the wall, circling Nathen’s waist and nuzzling his neck as the security guard got in and pushed the button for the fourteenth floor. The guard took no notice of the couple behind him, as Cameron continued to make them invisible to him, and he hummed along with the song playing in his earbuds. When the elevator opened, they followed him out to the end of the hall where he unlocked a door with a “No Entry” sign before returning to the elevator. Cameron caught the door and ushered Nathen through, following to another door, which led to a large open roof that had two folding lawn chairs positioned in the middle with a cooler.

“When we were kids, Syn and I would lay out under the Texas sky for hours into the night, most nights out of the week, and look for falling stars and listen to old music. We’ve come up here a couple of times together, especially when there are fireworks in the city or meteor showers. But most of the time I come up here alone, especially when I’m stressed,” Cameron explained.

Cameron went to the cooler and pulled out a couple of blankets that he tossed on a chair and a much larger heavier quilted tarp that he unfurled to lay out on the roof, projecting the image of cuddling with Nathen later. “It’s not as great as Texas.” He glanced up at the sky, showing Nathen the difference between the enormous inky night sky sprinkled with stars, planets, the Milky Way, unspoiled by the lights of a city versus the dulled darkness above where only a few stars shown. “But we’ve got this view!” He gestured out over the splendor of the city all around them.

A deep contented breath expanded Cameron’s warm chest against Nathen’s cool back, and he kissed his neck and shoulder, gently probing Nathen’s mind for his favorite music and especially music he wanted in the moment. Grinning, he flipped through his phone, which was loaded with his own eclectic taste, and kicked things off with The Mamas & The Papas which was part of his “mom’s mix” playlist that included music from the 50s through 70s that were mostly love songs he grew up listening to. He chuckled, as he had meant to bring Nathen up to dance with him but had not known what songs he would play and was elated to learn that Nathen had the same vast enjoyment of music.

They swayed with the song, and when the Platters started singing about smoke getting in eyes, Cameron ran his hands down Nathen’s arms and turned him around to guide him into a dance. Wrapping one arm around Nathen’s waist, Cameron caught his hand and pulled him tightly to him. He shushed when Nathen tried to explain that he didn’t know how to dance well.
