Chapter Fourteen

Entering the camp, Blue smiled as she saw several people, including her pupils, run toward them. They flocked around her and Aurelia, and the warm, seductive feeling of coming home made her smile. After Aurelia stepped off the bike, Blue did the same and let one of the women in charge of the off-roaders lead it away. Blue merely stood there when several pairs of small, slender arms wrapped around her hips, and one set actually hugged her left leg tight. She glanced down at the smiling faces of her students, and the little one hugging her thigh and actually standing on her boot-clad foot had to be a young sibling. The little girl was three years old at the most.

Blue’s heart went from being a mere blood pump to a molten mess of too many feelings at once. She crouched and put her arm around the little girl. “Hey, there. You my new student?”

“I’m Molly.” The little blond girl looked at her with big green eyes.

“Hello, Molly. I’m Blue.”

Molly’s eyes grew bigger. “You’re not blue. You’re blond.” She pointed at Blue’s hair sticking out from under her cap.

“There you are, child.” A woman hurried over and took the girl by the hand. “I’m sorry. This one can’t stop talking about going to school, like her siblings. She knows you’re the teacher.”

Milly and Jade had joined the woman and the girl, and only now did Blue realize that the woman before her had dared to set three children into the world. Either she was incredibly brave or equally careless. Perhaps both. “You have lovely girls,” Blue said, and meant it. “Milly and Jade are very bright, and this little one seems to take after them.”

“Thank you. I’m Cheryl.” The impossibly young-looking mother smiled shyly.

“And I’m Blue.”

“Good job, Blue, getting our captain back in one piece and not missing any teeth.” Milton came over and slapped Blue on the back. “However, she says that after rattling around on the bike that the roots in the southern woods are worse than ever and made her teeth nearly break.”

Nodding good-bye to Cheryl, Blue accompanied Milton over to Aurelia, where she stood between Tom and Dacia. “In my case I was afraid my kidney would come out.”

Snorting, Milton nudged Blue with his elbow. “I hear you. We need to find more new paths, or the authorities can just follow our tracks by looking for all the body parts strewn along our usual ones.”

“What morbid stuff are you going on about now?” Dacia groaned but accepted Milton’s arm around her shoulder. “Body parts?”

“Never mind. Dinner’s almost ready. If I tell you, you won’t be able to eat.”

“I believe you.” Dacia returned her attention to Aurelia. “So, did you make contact?”

“Yes.” Aurelia drew a trembling breath. “We’re on. First thing tomorrow morning, we’ll review the plan and make some alterations. I’ll need you two and Blue with me to brainstorm. You too, Tom, as you’re the camp leader here.”

“All right.” Tom looked intrigued. “I know you’ve always had a special mission in mind and that the three of you were just biding your time.
