LILIANNA WATCHED HER best friend receive the adoration of the crowd. Based on her dazed expression, Nadrina didnât truly understand just what an incredible thing sheâd done. Lilianna was having a hard time herself. Sheâd been there for Nadrinaâs duel with Volmar, but this was entirely different. Her friend had just beaten a noble conjurer with nothing but simple sorcery and her own wits. Sheâd even mimicked other schools of magic, like conjuration and enforcement. More than that, however, sheâd made it look easy.
Poor Nadrina was looking around with rounded eyes, clearly not knowing what to do with herself, but with a small smile forming on her lips. She gave the crowd a shy wave, causing the volume of their cheering to increase once again. The announcer sounded just as excited as he declared her the winner, making sure they were all eating the spectacle up.
âShe really did it,â Lilianna said aloud, more to herself than anyone else.
âI keep telling her sheâs better than she thinks she is,â Professor Aldric said next to Lilianna, though she could barely hear him over their class cheering. âMaybe now sheâll actually believe me. I might have to steal that sectional staff idea from her, though. Wish Iâd thought of it.â Lilianna looked over at him in surprise. Sheâd assumed Nadrina had learned that from him.
Of course, Lilianna was happy for Nadrina. Sheâd just done something amazing in her very first bout of the tournament. Unfortunately, it had the awful side effect of reminding Lilianna what a fool she had made of herself in her own first bout. That it was Nadrina, of all people, that had outdone her made her doubt herself even more.
Lilianna knew that the professor had shared magic with her that other conjurers would kill to learn. But others could learn it. There was nothing stopping them other than a lack of someone to show them how, and there was nothing special about Lilianna that allowed her to learn them.
Nadrina, however, had exceeded that. She had taken the very concept of sorcery and turned it on its head to use it for combat. There was nothing special about any of the enchantments she had used, except those terrifying wind claws. Most were beginner level and were being used by a sorcerer who hadnât even been practicing magic for a full year yet. And yet it worked splendidly.
Not a single sorcerer worth their salt wouldnât be able to pull off what Nadrina had done. Yet, how many would have even thought to fight like that? Or even tried to?
Sheâs like a younger version of the professor, Lilianna told herself. The sudden thought gave her that strange feeling in her chest again.
Nadrina had finally made it back to their seats and was immediately showered with more congratulations from everyone. Lilianna gave hers as well, and Nadrina lit up like the sun at all the attention. Since Alek had won his fight the previous day, all of their class except Codrin would go on to the semi-finals.
