“But Kurt ordered that we not send a strike force after him,” said the Minister of War, Thomas Mason-Smythe.

“Kurt is not in charge of this or any other office,” said Paul, glaring down at his second born. “He gave up the right of command when he abdicated as Emperor. I am in charge of the military of the Empire now.”

“You and the Grand Minister,” said the other Immortal.

“Ismael agrees wholeheartedly with me,” growled Paul. “The Emperor was not in his right mind, going off alone to rescue his woman. A woman,” spat the Grand Marshal. “Who in their right mind would risk all they worked for to rescue a woman?”

“Perhaps that is why my mother divorced you,” said the Minister. “You saw her as merely a breeding machine, something to slake your lust on.”

“And what else are they?” growled the Grand Marshal. “But I didn’t come here to argue about the relative merits of relationships between the sexes. I mean to launch a strike, and I mean to lead it. Now I need to know what resources are available. I want to be in the air within the hour.”

“So you’ve decided on an air drop? No ground forces involved?”

“I don’t think I have the time to deploy ground forces. No, they would be too noticeable. So I think an airdrop would be best.”

“The 103rd Heavy Airship Squadron is ready and waiting at the military airfield here in the city. That gives you three heavy ships.”

“OK,” said Paul. “That gives me enough transport for twelve hundred paratroops. I’ll want to load up a battalion and a half of the Imperial Guards Division rangers. Make sure the hawks are aboard. What about down in Getzburg?”

The Minister of War looked at the most recent order of deployment opened to his front, moving his fingers down the ledger for the Southern Military Region.

“The 221st Medium Airship Squadron is currently at the airfield in Getzburg City. That gives you four mediums.”

“OK. Another four hundred paratroops.”

“And I can give you a squadron of Lights as well. I’ll transfer them over from Balinger.”

“Five hundred more in troop carrying capacity. What do you have on the ground to give me?”

“The 274th Airborne Regiment is on the ground at Getzburg. Another reinforced battalion?”

“That should be enough,” said Paul. “If we need more we’re doomed anyway. And get at least a squadron of dragons deployed near the border. We might need them as well.”

“Just what are you expecting down there?” asked Thomas.

“Maybe a couple of squadrons of Tarakeshian airships, a regiment of cavalry? Who knows? But I don’t intend to be caught flat footed.”

“Now,” continued Paul, “I want some heavy forces stationed along the four corners area.
