CHAPTER 7

PRINCIPLES OF REDESIGN

Design thinking is unlikely to become an exact science, but as with the quality movement, there is an opportunity to transform it from a black art into a systematically applied management approach.

—Tim Brown, CEO and president, IDEO

It wasn’t that long ago that the quality and safety movement in healthcare was considered a fringe effort. It wasn’t considered a core part of a provider’s or hospital’s responsibility to measure, monitor, and improve upon quality and safety. Fortunately, that mentality changed due to the courageous and brilliant efforts of visionary leaders in the healthcare quality and safety movement. Quality and safety are, without doubt, core competencies for any provider group, hospital system, or healthcare insurance company. Just as quality performance has become the price-of-admission, if you want to participate in healthcare delivery, I believe that design is rapidly emerging as a core competency. It’s unlikely to become a regulatory issue, but it will determine success in the growing consumer-centric healthcare market.

My goal in this chapter is to assist you in cultivating a basic recognition and appreciation of these principles in order to evaluate the soundness of a design-based approach. I believe it will serve you well to understand these basic principles as you evaluate new products and services and make decisions that will profoundly impact your customers, your internal stakeholders, and your organizations. Here is a distillation of what I’ve gleaned from years of study, observation, and application. Please keep in mind that this is, by no means, a comprehensive list.
