THIRTEEN

REESE

What the hell?

The past few weeks have been a major adjustment. New jobs are always a challenge. New jobs in an unfamiliar line of work are exhausting. But every day I sit at my desk at Callahan Industries, I feel more at ease in my role. More confident with my responsibilities.

Overseeing finances sits at the top of my daily to-do list. Someone else logs the figures into spreadsheets from bank statements and invoices. My job is to review, compare, and monitor the numbers for accuracy. A tedious task, it isn’t for the faint of heart. The more I stare at the figures, the more they swirl together.

But this is different. My eyes aren’t buggy.

Something is off. Way off.

Pushing away from the desk, I rise to my feet, scoop up the laptop, and exit my office. In three strides, I knock on Trent’s open door, step inside, and close the door behind me. The jovial smile on his lips falls away when he sees the concern on my face.

“What’s wrong?”

Taking the seat across from him at his desk, I set the laptop down and spin it so we both have a view of the screen. I highlight a figure on the spreadsheet and shake my head.

“This number should be much higher.”

We stare at the income from the San Francisco branch of Callahan Industries, a location that opened its doors last year. Through last week's report, the site had steady earnings with a slight increase each week. Reviewing the recent figures, there is a noticeable dip in revenue on the spreadsheet. Karina, a long-term, trusted employee in the finance department, populates this particular log with figures from the bank accounts. She doesn’t cross-reference them with invoices and payments, that duty belongs to Tracy.

It isn’t in my job description to study itemized finances, but this weird vibe had me digging deeper today.

Trent turns the laptop to face him fully and drags it closer before tilting the screen. I stand and drag a chair around the desk to sit beside him. The arm of my chair grazes the arm of his as we lean in to study the screen.

His eyes dart back and forth as he reviews and compares the numbers on the spreadsheet before toggling to the detailed list of invoices I have up on another document. With each new line he reads, his face turns a deeper shade of red.

“What the fuck?” he mutters with a growl.

His hand freezes over the keys as his eyes lose focus. Anger charges the air in the room. Trent stiffens, his shoulders and spine rigid. A feral look flashes in his eyes as he stares at the screen. At the audible grind of his molars, Trent is a force to be reckoned with.

I lay a hand on his forearm and he startles in place. “Tell me what to do, T.”

His breathing spikes, his unbridled rage evident in each exhale. I keep my hand on his forearm. Let it be an anchor to ground him as he cools off.
