Conclusion
All three of these elements were involved in the Reformation writings on the Bible, although the mystical point was more specifically applied to the sacraments than to the wider method. On the sacraments, the reformers debated even the two some retained – baptism and the Lord’s Supper – from the perspective of Scripture, while the Catholic Reformation upheld all seven on the grounds that they were based on scriptural teaching and principles.
The scholastic approach was attacked fiercely by the reformers for its effect in extending elements of church faith and practice beyond or away from the teaching of the Bible. The spread of the Protestant groups was enabled by the fact that there was a tradition present with popular support that critiqued the absolute authority of church and pope, with the Bible a key element in voices challenging the current situation.
