Unexpected Benefits, Challenges, and Failures

In redesigning our writing courses and reexamining writing’s role in the liberal arts, we are also redefining our roles as faculty leaders in writing and pedagogy, shifting the emphasis from our disciplinary expertise in writing studies to our interest in and connections with students and colleagues across campus. Instead of emphasizing the specialized knowledge of writing studies—a central theme in work around threshold concepts and teaching for transfer—we approach writing as transdisciplinary and integrative. This defines writing as an adaptable element of strategic and creative problem solving and the writing program as a site of experimentation and innovation. It also positions us as curious researchers, actively seeking to learn from and with our colleagues. In this way, our engagement with design studio pedagogy has enabled us to strengthen our collaborative relationships on campus.
