Chapter 22

Friday Evening, July 12th

Don’t You Just Love Surprise Parties?

Libby and Carrie walked the two short blocks, and already Libby questioned her choice of footwear.

She noticed two large black Escalades and a silver Lexus sedan parked off to the side of the paved driveway, backed in for quick retrieval. She wondered who ranked such primo parking spots.

Two attractive young valets wore dark trousers and matching vests over crisp, white, open-necked dress shirts, the sleeves rolled up in deference to the warm evening. One of the men, the taller of the two, met them halfway and held out his hand for their invitation.

“Good evening, ladies.” He had short-cropped dark hair and a goatee—an oval nametag was pinned to his vest with ‘Felix’ printed in gold block letters.

Carrie handed him the invitation. He verified it, but his eyes lingered over the time of eight-thirty written at the top. Finally, he raised his dark eyes and looked from Carrie to Libby.

“You two are a little young for this party,” he said.

Carrie glanced at Libby. “Actually, my father received the invitation, but he’s been . . . called away, so I wanted to come to give my regards and my father’s regrets to Mrs. Morgan, in person.”

Felix held the invitation in both hands, shifting his gaze from Carrie to Libby.

Libby pointed to the top of the invitation. “We’re meeting some friends at eight thirty, so we won’t be here very long. That’s why we didn’t valet.”

It appeared that Felix would reply, but a small white SUV pulled into the opposite side of the driveway, distracting him. The car was met by Felix’s associate, who opened the back door, and a tall man with dark hair exited the passenger side. As the man spoke with the valet, the car pulled around, requiring Libby, Carrie, and Felix to move to the side.

“I know that guy.” Libby left Felix and Carrie to greet the newcomer. “Hey, Chaz. Fancy meeting you here.”

Chaz turned and gave her a big smile and a quick, admiring gaze that traveled from her head to her toes and back. “Libby, what a surprise,” he said, taking both of her hands in his and kissing her on both cheeks.

Carrie retrieved her invitation from Felix, returned it to her purse, and joined Libby near the mansion’s massive, wooden front door.

“Carrie, this is my friend Chaz,” Libby said. “I’m Carrie’s plus one tonight.”

Chaz smiled. “Pleased to meet you, and might I say, you both look dazzling.”

Carrie nodded and shook his offered hand.

“Thank you,” Libby said. “It’s fun getting dressed up now and then.”

Chaz gestured to the front door. “Shall we, ladies?” Carrie entered first.

As Libby passed by, he whispered, “I’m surprised Jack would let you out of the house alone looking like that.”

She returned his smile and walked in the door.
